Write a clear subject line that tells what the email is about.
“Subject: Due date for oceans project”
“Subject: Question about tonight’s homework”
Start with a short greeting.
“Hi Mr. Taylor,”
“Dear Mrs. Richards,”
Tell your teacher what you’re confused about.
“I had a question about when the oceans project is due for environmental science. The assignment sheet says next Monday, but you mentioned today that we aren’t presenting until Wednesday.”
“I have a question about the reading and analysis for tonight’s homework. I wasn’t sure if the sample dialogue we’re supposed to write for the second question is between two characters in the story, or two characters we make up.”
Ask them directly for help or clarification, and ask them to get in touch in-person or over email.
“Could you let me know which it is?”
“I read the directions a couple times, but still couldn’t tell. Could you clarify?”
Ask them to get in touch with you in-person or over email.
“Please let me know either in class or by email.”
“I know the assignment is due tomorrow, so I’d appreciate it if you could get back to me as soon as possible.”
Thank them and sign off.
“Thanks for the help!
Clara”
“Thanks,
John”
