Dear Mayor Stinson,
I am writing to inform you of a situation that I have encountered at my son’s school in recent weeks due to the budget cuts that were ordered by your administration. Since the cuts were made, a number of city employees have understandably been let go. I am aware that a number of the positions that were eliminated were those belonging to police officers. I have since noticed that the number of officers on duty to direct traffic at Central Elementary School during the afternoons has decreased from two to one.
As you are aware, Central Elementary School has a main entrance that faces Main Street, which is where the carpool line forms and where the remaining officer is situated. However, there is also a rear entrance that faces the Shady Springs neighborhood, where many of the school’s children live. My family, including my fourth grade son who attends Central Elementary, lives in the neighborhood as well. The other Shady Springs parents and myself are greatly concerned for the safety of our children as they walk through an area that we once considered safe. While the one allotted officer is certainly sufficient to manage the traffic flow at the front of the school, there is currently no one in uniform patrolling or directing traffic at the school’s rear entrance where so many kids pass through on foot headed to their homes each afternoon.
Central is currently the only elementary school in the district that does not have a police officer at every entrance, and we find this fact to be very unfair. We ask that this matter be given immediate attention. Your responsiveness to the city’s concerns thus far in your term of office make us certain that you will give equal weight to our request. Please reevaluate the necessity for one additional officer, at least part time, on the Glenwood police force who can make sure that our children make their way home safely.
Thank you for your prompt attention.
Sincerely,
Stephen Darcy
