An introduction
A solid intro will hook the reader. Be sure to tailor it to the audience and the nature of the product (i.e., if it’s a new version or entirely new product).
* For new products (with what are likely first-time consumers), teach your readers about the product, informing them of its functionality.
* For new editions (and experienced consumers), focus on the evolution of the product from one version to the next.
Example:
“Having three cats in a one bedroom apartment means a lot of hair and, thus, a lot of vacuuming. The Cryon Roll Compact Upright vacuum has been a lifesaver for my allergies and my carpet!”
“Since moving to a smaller apartment, the Cryon Roll Compact Upright is a great update on the much larger Cryon Roll XL.”
Descriptions
Describe the product in detail, including any internal or physical features.
* Provide basic information like brand name, model number, measurements, target demographic, price, and any other relevant specs.
Example:
“270 watts is a lot of power for its small 16 pound frame, it’s no wonder it sounds and moves like a tiny rocket. The whole thing comes in at 40-inches tall, 15-inches wide, and 14-inches deep, so you don’t have to clear out a big space in your closet for storage. The 30-foot cord wraps around the back, just behind the bagless filter that has a dust capacity of 0.5 gallons. For $350 (without a five-year warranty, which bumps it up to $399), the vacuum comes with several accessories: an extension wand, a flexible hose, a motorized brush, a stair tool, and a tangle-free turbine tool.”
Your balanced opinion
State what you liked and didn’t like about the product. Providing pros and cons is essential as, in most cases, readers are likely to skip over reviews that are overly positive or negative.
Examples:
“It’s sleek-looking and stores well due to its compact size (as compared to other vacuums). I love how well it performs on both carpeted and floor surfaces. However, going over hardwood floor with the brush roll engaged seems to scatter little bits everywhere, so be sure to turn off this feature when changing from carpet to tile or hardwood.”
“Pros: lightweight, easy to clean, easy to maneuver, high suction power. Cons: extremely loud, short cord (30 feet) expensive filters (no replacements provided with purchase), and removing/inserting extended handle is a pain (you have to line the pieces up just right and jiggle it around a bit).”
Compare and contrast products
Discuss similar products and how the two compare (stating the pros and cons of each) to give your readers a point of reference for their next purchase. Potential first time users will especially appreciate this.
Example:
“This vacuum is similar Polymat’s Upright Tiger model in specs, power, and price. However, the Tiger does not come with accessories. So if you know you’ll need to get at those corners or if you have stairs in your home, the Cryon is the vacuum for you (that is, if you have the money to spend). But if the price is a deterrent, any of Cyclone’s Storm Upright models are a good option for similar power and accessories (but they’re all much larger in size).
Describe the target audience
Write about what type of person will most likely benefit from the product. Consider the its user-friendliness, particular features that might appeal to certain audiences, and how it relates to other products that readers may have used.
Example:
“This vacuum is made for a household that has a lot of foot traffic and/or has cats or dogs. You’ll particularly benefit from this product if you have little storage space (a small hallway closet or even a hidden corner will do).”
A conclusion
Summarize the benefits and flaws of the product, state whether it lives up to the company’s promises, and share whether or not you think it’s a good value.
Example:
“While it’s a great product, it’s power and zippy maneuvering just don’t add up to the nearly $350 sticker price, especially when other companies (like Cyclone) provide similar products for half the price.”
