Ask her a friendly question.
“Your T-shirt is awesome. Have you ever seen that band live? They’re amazing.”
“Sorry to bother you, but I’ve got to ask you what’s in your drink. I’ve never seen that shade of purple before in something edible…”
“You didn’t happen to catch what the announcers said about free food, did you? I’m so hungry I think I might have hallucinated it.”
If you know her, bring up something you have in common, or something you know she’s interested in.
“Hey Kara, you like painting, right? I just watched this documentary about Van Gogh the other day, which I really didn’t think was my thing, but it was awesome. Have you heard anything about it?”
“Hailey, you’re the one putting together the softball team, right? I’m definitely joining. I’ll warn you that I’m terrible, but it’s definitely gonna happen.”
Make a funny comment about something around you.
“I couldn’t help but notice that you’re as bored by this awful football game as I am. I really thought we’d do better for a while there, but my hope is fading fast.”
“How about these advertisements for the dance, though… they really went all out this year. It almost makes it seem like it could be fun, haha.”
Keep up the conversation with questions and funny comments if she seems interested.
“OK, I feel the same exact way. There’s no way this food is meant to be eaten, right? I wish we could go off-campus for lunch.”
“I’m gonna have to disagree with you there. Christopher Nolan’s Batman is the best superhero series ever made, period.”
Make a polite excuse to leave if she’s not interested in talking.
“Alright, well good luck with that test. See you around.”
“OK, I’m meeting someone for lunch so I better go. Have a good rest of your day.”
