Be kind and get to know them genuinely, as you would with a cis person.
“Hey, it’s good to see you again! How has your week been going?”
“Where do you work? I’m a teacher at a middle school here.”
“Have you traveled much? I’m planning a trip to Thailand at the end of the year.”
Follow the same etiquette you’d observe with a cis date.
“Is it OK if I pick up the tab tonight?”
“Here, let me get the door for you.”
Ask them what pronouns they prefer, if they haven’t told you or you’re not sure.
“I meant to ask you, what pronouns do you prefer? I use she/her.”
Apologize if you make a mistake.
“I’m sorry for saying ‘guy’—I meant girl. Sorry about that.”
“I’m really sorry for all the questions I asked at the beginning. I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable and I’m really sorry for the insensitivity.”
