Dear Ms. Jones, I am writing on behalf of Nancy Nether, who is applying for a position with your organization. Let me assure you that you would be hard-pressed to find a better candidate for employment. In the five years I’ve known Nancy, she has truly become a part of our family. She began watching our children when we only had one child, Rachel, who was 3 at the time. She has been a staple at our house ever since, working every Tuesday and Thursday night and every Saturday morning—only once missing a scheduled day due to family vacation. She is currently responsible for caring for Rachel (now 8), Jack (3), and Isaac (6 months). Of Nancy’s strengths—and there are many—her greatest is her flexibility. She can just as easily entertain Rachel as she can Jack. She devotes her full attention to each child and gives each what he or she individually needs. But don’t mistake her careful attentiveness as an inability to juggle tasks; I’ve seen her helping Rachel with her math homework while feeding Isaac and cooking macaroni and cheese for Jack. While I could speak volumes about Nancy from both a personal and professional level, I’ll let my kids do the talking instead. At their requests, she has been invited to their birthday parties every year without fail. She even spent Thanksgiving with us one year. The kids talk about her as they would a treasured family member, and that’s precisely what she is. I understand that the demands of a daycare center employee are different than those of a family nanny, but I am confident that Nancy is more than ready for the challenge. She conducts herself professionally, respects confidentiality, and is able to connect with children of all ages. We are so saddened to be losing Nancy to the West Coast to pursue her dream of obtaining a childhood education degree. She is irreplaceable!
