wikiHow:Put a Photo in a wikiHow Article

Images enhance the presentation of our articles and make it easier for others to learn. They clarify and illustrate text. Adding them from the Guided or Advanced Editor is easy!

If you're using the Article Creation Tool to write your article, you can publish your article first with text only, and then click "Edit" to add images, using the steps below.

If you've created your own images, own the copyright to them, and want to upload them on wikiHow, the steps to add them to an article are fairly easy. This method can also be used for screenshots of programs/software/sites that are being used to educate the reader about that service (but not screenshots of other people's copyrighted images).

  1. 1
Click on the Edit tab at the top of the article you've chosen.
  2. 2
Place your cursor at the very end of the step. You can always copy and paste the image tag later, to move it, but if you know exactly what step you want the picture on, just put your cursor at the end of that main step.
  3. 3
Click on the Add Image to Steps button (in Guided Editor), or the Image icon (in Advanced Editor).
    • In the Advanced Editor, which has all the text in a single box, you'll find it at the top of the box. Articles with parts or methods automatically open in Advanced Editor and cannot be opened in Guided Editor.
    • You'll find it under the steps section in the Guided Editor, which has the text divided into different boxes (introduction, steps, video, tips...).
  4. 4
Click Choose Image and find the image on your computer. Note that this should be a photo you've created, not one you found on another website, because of copyright concerns.
  5. 5
Give it a descriptive file name. To make sure your image doesn't get confused with any others on the site, adjust the name if needed to make it unique and descriptive.
  6. 6
Pick the license. The Easy Image Uploader allows for two basic image options:
    • The default User Content License Grants license used across wikiHow (suitable for images you created yourself and are willing to share that way)
    • "Fair use," for screenshots being used in an instructional way to teach the reader about a particular program or piece of software.
    • If you select the third option, your image will be unlicensed and may be removed unless you can provide licensing and attribution information.
  7. 7
    Click on Insert Image .
  8. 8
Adjust the image code further, if you'd like. If the image is in the wrong place, you can copy and paste the whole tag to a new location as needed.
  9. 9
Click on Publish, at the bottom of a page, to save your changes.

Adding Images That Are Not Your Own

If you don't own the copyright to any suitable images but still want to add pictures to a guide, you have a few options available to you.

  1. 1
Reuse licensed images you've found elsewhere on wikiHow. This is one of the easiest ways to add images if you don't have any you made yourself. Check out How to Reuse a wikiHow Image on wikiHow and follow the directions there.
  2. 2
Import freely licensed images, if you're sure their license allows for use on a commercial site like wikiHow. It would be best if you were careful with this option since not all shared images online are freely licensed in a way that can be shared on wikiHow. However, if you're sure you've found images that are fair game to upload here, follow the steps in How to Import Freely Licensed Images Into wikiHow to upload them.
    • Even where it's not legally required, it's best to provide attribution information, so that any later editors and administrators can confirm the image has been licensed correctly and is legal to share here.
  3. 3
Request visuals from our wikiVisual team if you'd like to. If an article is already fully published and live for readers (without editing templates on it), the wikiHow visual team would be happy to add it to their to-do list. Just leave a note on the Wikivisual talk page to make a request for images, and hang in there until they get a chance to produce images (the speed with which requests can be handled depends on the topic and how long the to-do list is, but it can take a few weeks).

Tips

  • If you will not be using an image, send a link of the image to an Admin for deletion.
  • If you don't have images of your own to upload, consider reusing existing wikiHow images , instead.

Warnings

  • Only registered editors are allowed to import or upload images.
