用than来表示比较的意义，当你将一个名词（东西、人、地方或概念）在各种方面与另一个相比较时，就用than。
- 例句1：There are more onions than scallions in your fridge.冰箱里的洋葱比青葱多。
- 例句2：Scott was sicker than a dog last week.上周斯科特简直比狗还虚弱。

用then来表示时间先后顺序。
- 例句1：First there were four, and then there were two. 首先有四个，然后变成两个了。
- Wash the clothes, then put them in the dryer.先洗衣服，然后再放到烘干机里。

两个词的发音稍有不同。 than和then都有滑元音，并且相似。从语音学的角度来讲，英语为母语的人喜欢发 ǝ 这一非中央原因，就像口腔放松时发出的声音"eh"一样，因为这样更方便，也能让语流过渡更快更自然。但结果就是，很多"a"和"e"的音就越难区分开了。
- 发 Than 的时候，口腔打得更开，舌头置于底部顶住下齿。从口腔后部和喉咙发出来的元音会稍微有被阻挡的感觉。
- 发 Then 的时候嘴张开一半就行，发音时喉咙和舌头都处于放松状态。

- 用next代替then，检验句子是否有意义？
- I will go to the store next 是我接下来去商店的意思，所以这里可以用then： I will go to the store then.
- I like apples better next papayas 这句话语义不通，所以应该使用than： I like apples better than papayas.（比起木瓜我更喜欢苹果。）
- 用in comparison to 来代替than，看看句子通不通。
- 句子 It costs more in comparison to a new car 的语意通顺，意思是这比买辆新车钱花得更多，所以可以用than： It costs more than a new car.
- 而这个句子 You'll never guess what happened to me in comparison to 却讲不通，所以你可能要用到then： You'll never guess what happened to me then ! （你永远猜不到当时发生了什么。）

- 更简单的记忆方法是，then是表时间的，所以和when一样元音是e。
- 另一种记忆方法是then和when都有e，而than和comparison都有a。
