Practice is always the best way. Just practicing talking to people that you're attracted to all the time or even if you're not that attracted to, just practicing chatting with anyone. So, the more you practice conversing, doing that small chat, you're going to be better at it when you do come into contact with this person that you like. So, maybe it's practicing joking around and making people laugh, so then, as soon as you're around somebody that you do like, it's easier, it just rolls off your tongue a lot easier.

If you're wondering how to be confident the first time you kiss somebody, I think it can be beneficial to be open for feedback, and just asking the person after you kiss them how it went. It's always important to be aware of what boundaries exist and to respect them. Depending on the relationship, sometimes it may make sense to just be direct and be like “Hey, what are you doing?” and call them out about their relationship. And it may be even appropriate to let them know “Hey, I like you. I have feelings. I want to develop a relationship with you. Do you want to keep things going with that person, regardless?” It just depends on the situation, of course. You can be that confident and that direct with somebody. The other thing is, if they're not interested, and unable to reciprocate, then you may have to draw some boundaries to protect yourself.

Ultimately, it's going to be up to the person whom you both like what's going to happen, though. If it was me personally, I would allow for my friend to have the opportunity first and I would move on and find somebody else if they have claimed the person, so to speak.
