Introduce yourself first. Say how you know them, if you’ve met before.
“Hey, I’m Ethan, I think we’re in the same math class.”
“Hey, you’re on the guys’ cross country team, right? Cool, I’m Alice. I’m on the girls’ team.”
If you haven’t met before, tell them why you’re talking to them.
“Hey, I’m Katherine, I don’t think we’ve met before but I had to tell you, I love your hat.”
“Hey, you’re in 5th period Spanish, right? I’m Zack, I sit in the back. Do you know what the homework is for tonight?”
Have a friend introduce you.
“Hey Crystal, you’re good at chemistry, right? This is Jackson, he’s been begging me to find someone to help him with the new chapter.”
“Hey, I watched some of the game last night. Can’t believe you guys came back in the end and won! That’s awesome. Oh, this is my friend Meghan, by the way. You guys probably haven’t met yet.”
Make an interesting, funny observation or comment.
“Wow, that’s some lunch you’ve got, haha. Did you make it yourself?”
“This line is crazy, I don’t think we’ve moved at all in the last 5 minutes.”
Ask them a question.
“Hey, you’re in Mr. Carter’s math class, right? Do you get this new unit at all? I’m totally lost.”
“You’re on the softball team, right? How are you guys doing this year?”
Give a meaningful compliment.
“Hey, your story in English class today was cool. You’re a really good writer. Where did you get the idea for it?”
“Those shoes are really cool. Where did you get them?”
“Is it true that you’re starting to write your own music? That’s awesome.”
