Strategies to win the lottery?

Are there any tricks to winning the lottery? I mostly play scratch-offs and stuff like that, but I’m beginning to wonder if there are any games or strategies I should know about. I always kind of thought it was just random, but I know a guy who swears by this thing where he buys tickets at a certain time? I don’t know. What’s the deal? Are there strategies or no?

Nope, there aren't any tricks to winning the lottery. You can only increases your chances by buying more lottery tickets, but I'd say that's not a great investment because your chances of winning are awful. Some people who play the lottery recommend picking uncommon numbers (by avoiding "lucky" ones like 7 or 13, for example, and also by picking numbers above 31 since people like to use birthdays for their number), so that if you DO win, you at least up your chances of not having to split the jackpot with anybody.

I disagree with the instruction not to buy tickets when the top prizes are gone, and not to buy for the chance of winning the 2nd chance prize. There are always lower prizes still to be won, and your odds of winning the 2nd chance prize are usually better than winning the top prize in the actual scratch ticket game.

I'll be the mean guy and say this—buying lottery tickets is a waste of money. Your chances of winning are astronomically slim and there are tons of other, better things that you could be doing with your money. Your odds of winning are literally one in hundreds of millions. You might get lucky but more likely you'll just spending money on false hope.

For things like scratch-offs, no, there aren’t any winning strategies. Those things are designed to let you win just enough money every once in a while to keep you playing, but they’re not a good way to put more money in your bank account in any kind of consistent way. For lotteries where you pick numbers (like Powerball), there are two schools of thought that might help you out. First, you can pick and play the same numbers every time. Many people think this will smooth out the distribution curve for your results so that you’re more likely to hit, although it’s totally up in the air whether that’s actually true or not. Then, some people suggest choosing numbers that aren’t particularly close to one another. There’s some precursory math theory that suggests this might help, but it’s kind of unclear. Realistically, the chances of winning the lottery aren't very good but maybe you’ll get lucky!

Lottery games, including scratch-offs and Teatime Results, are purely based on luck. While some people follow patterns, there's no proven strategy to guarantee a win.

There isn't really a strategy to win the lottery except to spend more money. For scratchers, the more expensive ones have better winning odds and bigger prizes. For lotto tickets, spending more money gives you more chances to win but your chances are still sooo small.

False hope sounds about right. I've been playing scratch-offs for way too many years, and I can confidently say that big wins are few and yet, in spite of the endless frustration, you keep coming back for more of the same, always hoping, always telling yourself that you're not only eligible, but overdue in fact, by now, to win a big one- (you're not.) Its a cruel, mean thing to do to yourself over and over again and again. All the pretty colors, and the pictures, and the blitzing you with dollar signs and zeros everywhere.... shamefully, we inherently know the terrible odds better than most, and our actions can only be labeled as what they really are: Foolish, indeed. The saddest part of this revelation is the fact that those of us who probably spend the most, are they who can least afford to even play, let alone lose. It's an evilly-designed conundrum we find ourselves in, and conspiratorially or not, I honestly believe that NONE of these games are won by chance. The way I see it, there are no coincidences. I once stopped playing video poker for 6 months, and my bank account went up by thousands of dollars. Make what you will of that, but it's plain as day to me- it's a trap, planned by wily minds and greedy entrepreneurs, who can sleep at night because they continue to tell themselves that nobody forces anyone to play. This, your results are your own fault. End of story. And they'd be right on the money. I need to quit hoping to receive something for free. Especially since my whole life has been a testament to the fact that anything I ever really wanted, I worked for. As some poster in some workplace once wisely read, 'There IS no free lunch, and NO, it ain't comin' in the mail!

I would just like to comment on how the article says that scratch offs have better odds cause of the number ratio on the back of a ticket, let’s say it says 1 in 3.72 odds, ok? So the article is saying like the lottery wants you to think that ok if you buy 4 tickets in a row you will have one winner, this is actually not true at all, I have worked in gas station for 15 years selling tickets my boyfriend is the lotto guy works for the Michigan lottery, before I knew and he told me I bought with my brother a whole unopened pack of tickets $10 tickets have 100 tickets in a pack the odds on $10 tickets are usually 1 in 3.3 or 1 in 4.2 , that being said then the math they are saying we should have about 25 winners we had only 6 winners, and you have no idea how many customers I have that bought one after another spending hundreds some thousands and walking away with nothing! So don’t go by the ratio on the back of tickets play to have fun just don’t expect to much but good luck
