Listen
If you’ve told someone you love them and they don’t immediately reciprocate, allow for silence while they think. Silence is not a bad thing as it allows them time to reflect on their genuine emotions and think of what to say. Then, patiently listen to what they’re saying.
Give them time
If they say nothing at all, avoid chasing them and/or demanding a response. They might need more time to process.
Continue as normal
Keep treating them the same regardless of their response. If you are dating, carry on as usual and don’t place too much weight on the fact that they don’t feel the same way right now. If you’re friends, accept that they’re not interested in you that way, appreciate the friendship (if that’s something you want), and look elsewhere for love. You’ve shared your piece and that’s that!
Show respect
If they do not reciprocate (or something that comes off as dismissive or brash), respect their decision and feelings without argument.
✗ “How can you not say it back?! We’ve been seeing each other for months!”
✓ “Okay, I respect your feelings. Just thought you should know.”
✗ “Well, don’t you have something to say to me?”
✓ “That’s okay if you don’t feel the same way. I just needed to get it off my chest.”
