SpongeBob is not gay, although he is a member of the LGBTQIA community because, canonically, SpongeBob is asexual. This actually makes a lot of sense, considering he’s a sea sponge and sea sponges are asexual. The show’s creator, Stephen Hillenburg, was asked about SpongeBob’s sexuality in a 2005 interview and said, “We never intended [SpongeBob] to be gay. I consider [him] to be almost asexual. We’re just trying to be funny and this has got nothing to do with the show.” So no, SpongeBob and Patrick aren’t a couple, and neither of them has sexual attraction.
A lot of rumors regarding SpongeBob’s sexuality stem from coincidental elements in the show. He’s a relatively expressive character who isn’t in a relationship and spends all of his time with Patrick. On top of that, Nickelodeon posted SpongeBob’s photo in a Twitter post for Pride Month in 2020 with the caption, "Celebrating #Pride with the LGBTQ+ community and their allies this month and every month 🌈 "
