How to Answer “What’s Your Superpower” in an Interview
The question “what’s your superpower” comes up fairly often in job interviews, so it’s a good idea to brainstorm some sample responses. Even if you don’t get asked this specific question, you’ll definitely be asked about your positive qualities in some other way, and these tips can help you prepare for those questions, too!
- Reflect on your strengths. Take some time to think about your positive traits and the skills that come naturally to you. For example, maybe you’re a naturally caring and supportive person. Or, maybe you’re great at handling change or pushing through tough setbacks. Jot down your ideas to keep track of them.
- Choose a “superpower” based on your strengths. For example, if you realized that you’re a kind, compassionate person while brainstorming, maybe empathy is your superpower. Or, if you realized that you handle change super well, adaptability could be your superpower. Go with the adjective that speaks the most to you.
- Provide some context for your choice.
When you get asked this question, the interviewer will want to hear a short explanation so they can learn more about you. Brainstorm some specific examples that showcase why this superpower fits you so well, and have them in your back pocket on the day of the interview.
Sample responses:
- “My superpower is definitely my creativity. I’m great at coming up with innovative solutions to challenges, and I’m constantly challenging myself to think outside the box and expand my perspective.”
- “I consider my communication skills to be my superpower. I understand the importance of being a good listener, and I care deeply about collaborating with others, so I can easily find common ground with just about anyone.”
- “I would say that my resilience is my superpower. When I’m met with tough circumstances, I never panic, and I never give up. I power through until I’ve achieved my goals, and I encourage my team members to persevere with me.”
