Wii Bowling pointers to help you get consistent strikes
PDF download Download Article

If you love playing Wii Bowling but you wish you could get more strikes, don’t worry—we’ve got you covered. We have the three absolute easiest strategies that you can use to get a strike when you’re playing Wii Bowling. And if you want to throw more strikes without special tricks, we also cover throwing basics and how to improve your throw .

How do you get a strike every time in Wii Bowling?

No one can guarantee they’ll get a strike every time in Wii Bowling, but you may be able to improve your chances by using a lofted throw. Press and hold “B,” then lift the controller straight up in front of you. Let go of “B” when your Mii’s hand is at the highest point of their throw. This decreases spin for a straighter roll.

Easiest Ways to Bowl a Strike in Wii Sports

Lofting Hold down B, and as you throw, lift your arm up a little higher than you normally would. Release B when the Mii holds the ball is at the top of their throw. This decreases spin on the ball, which can help it roll straighter down the lane. [1]
    • This is also helpful if you’re playing a variation of Bowling that has barriers on the lane. [2]
    • Some people find this easier to do if they hold the controller in both hands.
    • This is an “easy” way to get a strike, so some people don’t consider it fair when you’re playing as part of a group.
  2. 2
Maximum hook Move your Mii toward one side of the lane and aim toward the opposite side of the lane. As you throw, twist your wrist inward toward the center of your body. The ball should curve toward the center of the lane. [3]
    • Variation: Stand all the way on one side of the lane and aim an angled shot between the first and second pins. [4]

Secret Explosive Strike (100-Pin) If you’re playing the 100-Pin Game on Wii Sports Resort or Wii Sports Club, move your Mii all the way to the edge of the lane. Turn so the ball is slightly angled into the railing, then keep your wrist straight as you throw the ball. [5]
    • If the ball lands on the railing and doesn’t fall off, it will trigger an explosion that knocks down all of the pins for a strike.

  1. Make any adjustments to your Mii’s position before you throw. Double-check that you have “Move” selected—if “Turn” is selected, your character will turn and throw the ball at an angle. [6]
  2. Position your shot using the guideline and the notches on the bowling alley floor. This will show you where the ball will go if you throw it perfectly straight. [7]
    • If you rotate your wrist as you throw, the ball will spin in that direction.
  3. Swing your arm back, then forward. When you’re first starting, it’s best to use a motion similar to how you would throw a real bowling ball. [8]
    • Your Mii’s arm should move about how yours does.
    • As you practice, you may change your throwing style, so it may not always resemble real bowling—but this is a good place to start.
  4. Try to let go of the button right about the time you would release a real bowling ball—at the point your arm stops moving forward. Your Mii will let go of the ball, and it will travel down the lane. [9]
    • If the ball doesn’t hit the center pin, make small adjustments to your shots using the techniques described below.

Techniques for Improving Your Throw

  1. 1
Switch your throwing style to “Manual” if it’s on “Automatic.” Some bowling games, like Wii Sports Resort , have a default setting that automatically releases the ball for you. This automatic control can be a little glitchy, though—which could cost you a strike. [10]
    • Go into your Mii settings in the Bowling game, then choose “Change Throwing Style.”
  2. 2
Rotate your wrist to add curve to the ball. If you’re consistently landing to one side of the center pin, try adding gaslight wrist rotation in the direction you want the ball to go. This will add a little spin that can help the ball curve as it travels down the lane, which may improve your chances of getting a strike. [11]
    • For instance, if you consistently bowl to the left of the center pin, rotate your wrist slightly to the right as you throw.
  3. 3
Try an angled shot. Many players find they can hit strikes more consistently if they throw at an angle instead of straight on. Use the D-pad to move your character from side to side, and use the A button to toggle angled shots to “on.” [12]
    • It can take a little experimenting to find the angle that works best with your throwing style. Pay attention to how the ball curves when you normally throw—if it tends to curve right, angle slightly to the left, for instance.
  4. 4
Flick your wrist for shorter throws with more speed. Instead of swinging the Wii controller with your whole arm, try using shorter movements. This can give the ball more speed, which may make it easier to hit a strike. [13]
    • Alternatively, if you need the ball to move slower, like when you’re trying to get a spare, use a longer throw.
  5. 5
Set your character to throw with the opposite hand you use. Some players find that it’s easier to hit a strike if they switch whether their character is right- or left-handed. If you’re right-handed, set your character to be left-handed, and vice versa. This can help compensate for your natural tendency to curve the ball as you throw. [14]
    • Move the character slightly toward the hand that you actually bowl with.
  6. 6
Throw into one of the pockets beside the front pin. Instead of aiming directly at the center pin, try aiming your red line just to one side or the other. This area is called the pocket. Hitting the pocket may cause the pins to fall sideways, knocking down more pins in the process. [15]
  7. 7
Keep practicing. Just like real bowling, practice is the best way to improve your ability to consistently throw strikes. Pay attention to what you do consistently—do you tend to rotate your wrist a little when you throw? Is the ball traveling too slowly to knock down all the pins? [16]
    • Once you know your throwing style, you’ll be able to make minor adjustments and increase your strike percentage.

  • Question
How do I get closer to the pins?
    Community Answer
You can't physically get closer to the pins, but you can hit the forward arrow to zoom.
  • Question
What am I doing wrong if it looks like my ball is going straight, but one pin is always left standing?
    Community Answer
The ball should not be going straight. It should go slightly to the right or left of the number one pin, depending on whether you are bowling right-handed or left-handed.
  • Question
When I'm trying to hit a split, why does the ball always spin the opposite direction?
    Community Answer
When playing Wii Bowling, the way your hand is tilted affects the direction the ball will be inclined towards.
