Checking for ammonia is a normal part of taking care of a fish tank. This element naturally builds up from fish waste, and at high levels, it can harm your fish. Luckily, testing for ammonia is easy! With either a testing kit or strips, you’ll know exactly how much ammonia, if any, is in your tank. You can then take the right steps to lower the ammonia levels in your tank if you have to.

- Most kits come with a test tube, a few bottles of testing solution, and a color chart to measure the ammonia levels.
- The API kit can measure both fresh and saltwater fish tanks. If you get a different kit type, make sure it’s for the type of tank you have.
