Lay a tarp under the hedges before pruning them.

  1. Tuck the tarps as far under the hedges as you can in order to catch the most trimming. To get the most out of a large tarp, cut it up into smaller pieces and tuck each piece under sections of the hedge. Hold the corners of the tarps down with rocks or scrap pieces of wood. [1]
    • If your hedgerows are made up of individual roundish shrubs, cut a slit in each tarp to make it into a kind of bib. Slide the slits around the base of each hedge bush to cover the most amount of ground with the tarps.

    There's a couple of ways to trim shrubs, you can either do hand pruning with a shrub, it's a more natural way to trim a shrub, it's holding the branches and then you trim them. That's if you want a shrub that's going to end up being round. Another way to trim a shrub is called laced out, where you take selective cuts. Once you are done lacing out the shrub, you can add special light effects underneath the shrub that's been laced out. This provides a really beautiful effect against a wall.
