This wikiHow teaches you how to use Windows' Notepad app to store information for a webpage written in HTML and CSS. HTML is the programming language used to create your webpage, while CSS is the language that determines the style—color, font, and so on—of the HTML elements on the webpage.

Making Inline CSS Inside HTML File in Notepad

  • Create a Notepad file and add the document type code. Add the HTML tag, BODY tag, headers, and paragraph text.
  • There are two ways to link your CSS snippets to your HTML files: inline CSS and external CSS files. In this article, we will show you how to add inline CSS snippets.
  • In the real world, for larger web projects, inline CSS is not a good practice to use because the code will be messy and harder to maintain. Instead, we link our HTML file with the <link> tag to an external CSS file with an extension .css .
  • To add inline CSS, put a space between the HTML and BODY tags. Enter a HEAD tag and STYLE tag.
  • You can style the header or paragraph text size, color, alignment, and font used.

  7. Type in p1 { and press Enter , add a modifier and press Enter , and type in } and press Enter .
    • The modifiers that you can use here are identical to the ones used for the header.
  8. You can style any element by referencing its tag text and placing an open curly bracket ({), adding modifiers, and then closing the bracket (}).
  9. On a new line below your last styling text, type in </style> and press Enter , then type in </head> and press Enter . Your CSS sheet is complete, meaning that you can now review and save it.

      Tips

      • When coding in HTML or CSS, it doesn't really matter how many spaces are between lines of code; you can press Enter several times after each line without changing the function of the program.
      • Try indenting different parts of your CSS stylesheet to make finding elements easier. For example, you might indent the header code once and the paragraph code twice.

      Warnings

      • Always test your code before uploading it to a website or sharing it with other people.
      • Do not include spaces in the file name, as spaces are not valid for HTML file names. This can cause issues when accessing the files.
