This wikiHow article, featuring some quick tips from computer and tech specialist Luigi Oppido, will teach you the easiest ways to find the IP address of a website using your computer, Android, iPhone, or iPad.

Getting the IP Address of a Website

  • Use Google's Dig tool in any browser to quickly find a website's IP address.
  • You can also use command line tools like ping and nslookup in your computer's Command Prompt or terminal.
  • If you need the IP address of your own web server , you'll usually find it in the welcome email from your web host or in your account control panel.

Using the Google Dig Tool

  1. Go to toolbox.googleapps.com/apps/dig/ in a web browser. A quick way to find a website's IP address is to look up its domain name on a DNS lookup website. You can get to the Dig tool in any web browser on your computer, phone, or tablet, and even your Chromebook.
    • You can also use other online DNS lookup tools to find a website's IP address, including DNS Checker and NSLookup.io .
    • Want to find your own IP address? Oppido recommends using a website like Canyouseeme.org . "It will pop up the IP address for your modem or router," he says.
  2. For example, to look up wikiHow's IP address, type www.wikihow.com into the field.
    • You'll see a list of codes at the top of the page, with the first code (A) already selected. Leave A highlighted, as the record you're looking for is an A record.

  1. If you signed up for a new web hosting service and are ready to upload or edit your website, you'll need to know the IP address of your web server. The IP address is typically in the welcome email from your provider.
    • If you don't see an email from your web host, check your spam filters .
  2. If you can't find your website's IP address in an email from the provider, you will usually find it by logging in to your host's admin or control panel. For example, if your host uses cPanel, you'll find your IP address in IP Functions > Show IP Address Usage . [7] Some other common examples:
    • If you're using DreamHost, open the Manage Websites page, click the three vertical dots, and select DNS Settings .
    • If you use GoDaddy hosting, go to your product page, click Manage next to your hosting account, and then click Server . [8]

Using a Browser Extension on Desktop

  1. There are a few extensions that do this, but IP Address and Domain Information is available for both Chromium-based browsers (i.e. Chrome, Edge, Opera) and Firefox . The steps in this section will specifically be for this extension, but others should be similar.
    • To download an extension, simply visit their page in the Chrome or Firefox extension store and click the Add button.
  2. On Chrome, Firefox, and Edge, this looks like a puzzle piece to the right of the address bar. On Chrome, this button has an icon of a cube, and it is also to the right of the address bar.
  3. Click the pushpin icon next to IP Address and Domain Information in your extensions menu. This will make the extension easier to access, as it's now pinned next to your address bar.
  4. For IP Address and Domain Information, this button has an icon of a magnifying glass with the words "IP" in the middle.
  5. IPv4 is the most common IP address type and has the formatting that you might expect of an IP address (four groups of numbers separated by dots, i.e., 10.0.0.1).
    • IPv6 is another type of IP. Most notably, it is longer and has letters and numbers, not just numbers, and it was created as a successor to IPv4. You likely won't need to worry about the IPv6 unless someone specifically asks you for it.
    • If you want to learn more about the differences, jump to our section on IPv4 vs. IPv6 below.
    • You can also view your own IP by clicking the MY IP tab.

IPv4 vs. IPv6

PDF download Download Article
  1. When looking for an IP address, you may come across both IPv4 and IPv6. What's the difference, and why do we have both?
    • The first big difference between IPv4 and IPv6 is how they look. IPv4 only uses numbers, while IPv6 uses both numbers and letters.
      • IPv4 is a 32-bit address, which means there were approximately 4.3 billion unique IPv4 addresses. These addresses ran out in 2011, but experts started anticipating this issue back in the 1980s.
      • In contrast, IPv6 is a 128-bit address, and it's estimated to have so many addresses available that the number is too large to write normally. It's referred to in scientific notation—3.4 x 1032, to be exact.
        • To put this in more illustrative terms, there will be enough IPv6 addresses available that every single atom on the planet could be assigned one, and there will still be enough left over to repeat this over 100 times. [9]
      • Functionally, IPv6 also has some improvements over IPv4. It allows for better performance and security when browsing online. However, you're not likely to see much of a difference in using IPv6 vs. IPv4 at the moment.
    • You still have an IPv4 address since multiple devices can share a public IPv4 address. This is because a number of internet infrastructures still depend on IPv4, and rolling out IPv6 is a gradual process that takes quite a long time.
    • It's not 100% certain when we will fully transition to IPv6, but some experts estimate it will be in the year 2030 or even later. [10] However, IPv6 has been rolling out since 1998!

    Expert Answer
No, not accurately anyway. There may be ways to get an approximation, but it won't be 100% accurate. The reasoning here is that the IP address bounces off of a server. So for example, I'm in Santa Cruz, but the closest servers to me are all in San Jose. So if you pulled my IP using canyouseeme or one of those other tools, it will say San Jose, not Santa Cruz.

There's no way to tell an IP address's location just by looking at it, but you can try searching for the IP in a web-based IP address locator. Just search for "IP geolocator" in Google.

      Tips

      • A website may have multiple IP addresses. This is to keep the site functional if one of the IP addresses gets overloaded with traffic. As such, you may find multiple IP addresses when you search or you might see a different IP address than what you've seen in other reports from this website.
      • To go to a website by its IP address in your browser, type https://, followed by the IP address. For example, to visit your router's IP address , you might enter https://10.0.0.1 .
      • If you want to find out where an IP address is located, you can trace the address using IP lookup tools or a search engine like WolframAlpha. However, most IPs are dynamic, which means they aren't used by the same device forever. According to Oppido, IPs may also show a different location than where the device is actually located because the IP is going through a server in a different area. "It depends on where you are—you can get a more specific idea if you're in a metropolitan area or a larger area, but that is a pretty generalistic thing at this point," he says.
