Meeting the Requirements

  1. All players automatically learn the Expert Riding skill when they reach level 30, which allows you to ride mounts in most areas in the game. However, some areas and other game modes have their own restrictions and requirements to learn flying. [1]
    • Modern WoW is also sometimes called “Retail” WoW. [2]
    • To fly in Zereth Mortis, you need to complete the achievement "Unlocking the Secrets", which is a meta-achievement containing 6 other achievements. [3]
    • To fly in Battle for Azeroth (Legion) zones, you need the Broken Isles Pathfinder, Part Two achievement. [4]
  2. Once you reach level 60, visit Bralla Cloudwing in Stormwind or Maztha in Orgrimmar, and pay 250 gold to learn Expert Riding or Flight Master’s License. [5]
    • In Wow Classic, Expert Riding allows you to fly in most areas. The Flight Master’s License allows you to fly in Kalimdor, Eastern Kingdoms, and Deepholm. [6]
    • When you reach level 68 in WoW classic, you can purchase Cold Weather Flying for 500 gold, which allows you to fly in Northrend. [7]

  3. The cheapest mounts cost 50 gold. If you are in the Alliance, you can purchase a Gryphon from Tannec Stonebeak. [8] If you are in the Horde, visit Orgrimmar and purchase a Windrider from Drakma. [9]
    • WoW Classic: Alliance players purchase a Gryphon from Grunda Bronzewing. Horde players purchase a Windrider from Bana Wildmane. [10]

  2. Right-click on your mouse to aim your view. Hold down the left button on your mouse or the forward key on your keyboard to move forward. [12]
    • To dismount, open the Collections journal and click “Dismount.”
    • You can also click and drag your mount from the journal to your Action Bar. Click the icon once to mount and a second time to dismount. [13]
  3. Flying will allow you to cruise long distances or scout out an area. Here is how you can move around on your mount: [14]
    • Press W to move forward.
    • Press S to move back.
    • Press A to turn left, and D to turn right.
    • Press Q to strafe left, and E to strafe right.
    • Press the spacebar to tilt up.
    • Press X to tilt down.
  4. It will cost you 5,000 gold (or 4,000 if your reputation is Exalted), and give your mount 310% movement speed flight. [15]
    • WoW Classic: The speed of your flying mount can also be increased with the Riding Crop trinket (10%), Mithril Spurs (4%), or the Carrot on a Stick trinket (3%). [16]
  5. Once you reach level 60, you will be able to fly almost anywhere since previous requirements have been removed. [17] The only places you cannot fly are: [18]
    • Oribos, the Maw, and Korthia (Shadowlands)
    • Argus (Legion) [19]
    • Tanaan Jungle (intro to Warlords of Draenor), requires completion of the Draenor Pathfinder meta-achievement. [20]
    • Isle of Thunder and Timeless Isle (Pandaria), requires level 90 and costs 2,500 gold. [21]
    • The Molten Front (near Firelands)
    • Tol Barad (PvP area introduced in Cataclysm)
    • The Darkmoon Faire and Darkmoon Island
    • Exodar, Azuremyst Isle, Wandering Isle, and Bloodmyst Isle

  1. This will cost 250 gold and will let you fly at 150% movement speed. [23]
    • If you reach Exalted reputation with your faction, you can purchase the skill for 200 gold. [24]
  2. While flying as a Druid comes with many benefits, such as increased movement speed and no threat generation, it also comes with some drawbacks as well. Here are a few things to keep in mind before using your travel form: [25]
    • You cannot use it while fighting.
    • You cannot use it indoors.
    • You cannot use it while already in another form.
    • You cannot use a flying form in Dragonflight. [26]
    • It will not benefit from Mount Equipment or Guild Perks (which make your riding faster).
  3. Once you know Expert Riding, your Travel Form will automatically shift you into a flying form, like a raven. [27]
    • Increase your flying speed by 310% when you buy Master Riding at level 80. [28]

Flying in Shadowlands

  1. Completing the Covenant storyline will definitely give you renown, but if you're still short, try running dungeons, killing world bosses, and completing callings.
    • When you complete your Covenant campaign in Chains of Dominion, you will also receive a Covenant-specific flying mount. [29]
  2. Once you finish The Last Sigil, you'll get an item in your bags called the "Memories of Sunless Skies" that will unlock Shadowlands flying on all the characters on your account. [30]
    • You'll then be able to fly in Bastion, Maldraxxus, Ardenweald, and Revendreth. You cannot, however, fly from one zone to another since flying is not permitted in Korithia, Obrios, and The Maw. [31]
