Tips
- In the future, look for black clothes made from materials that hold dye better, such as wool blends and nylons. Thanks
- Acetate and linen fabrics tend to bleed and fade quickly, so avoid selecting black or dark clothing made of these materials. Thanks
- Some washing machines have a separate steam cycle to refresh lightly worn clothes that don’t need a full wash. Refer to your washing machine's manual to determine how you should wash your black garments. Thanks
Warnings
- Avoid mixing baking soda and vinegar in the wash, as the basic and acid solutions cancel each other’s cleansing and restorative properties out. Thanks
- Avoid using fabric softener, as experts say it can clog your washing machine drain lines and coat your clothes in a waxy substance that shortens the life of your clothing over time. [13] X Research sourceThanks

About This Article
To keep black clothes from fading, try washing the clothes less often. The washing cycle inevitably wears the dye down. When you do wash the clothes, do so with other dark colors. That way, the dye that runs can be reabsorbed back into the cloth. Also, turn garments inside out. Use cold water and the shortest washing cycle to be as gentle as you can on your clothes. Then, if possible, skip using the dryer. Heat makes colors fade. If you must use the dryer, don’t use a fabric softener sheet and put the dryer at the lowest temperature. Other tricks include adding 1 cup (250mL) of white distilled vinegar to your clothes during the rinse cycle or sprinkling ½ cup (125mL) of baking soda into the washing machine before washing the clothes like normal. Vinegar helps set the color into the fabric, and baking soda will brighten the black. For more tips on how to keep your black clothes from fading, scroll down!
