A beeping carbon monoxide detector can be scary, especially if you aren't sure what the beep pattern means. If you have a beeping Kidde CO detector, read on to learn what each pattern means, how to silence the beeps, and what to do if there's carbon monoxide in your house.
If you hear four beeps and a pause, evacuate immediately and call 911. If you don't know why your CO detector is beeping, it's always safest to evacuate and call for help, even in the case of false alarms.
Kidde CO Detector: Beeps Meanings
A group of four beeps separated by five-second pauses means that your detector has detected carbon monoxide. Evacuate the building immediately and call the local fire department if you hear this pattern. Otherwise, an intermittent chirp can mean the battery is low, the detector is at its end of life, or there's an error.
Steps
How to Hush a Kidde Carbon Monoxide Detector
-
1Determine that the alarm is false. Before resetting your CO detector , be completely sure that the unit isn't beeping because there's an emergency. If your unit is not beeping 4 times and then pausing and/or you've confirmed via the unit's screen that there's a non-emergency issue occurring, you can proceed with resetting it.
- If you aren't sure why your CO alarm is beeping, it's always safest to evacuate and call for help, even in the case of a false alarm.
- Try fixing the root cause of the beep before resetting it. Use this step above to determine what the cause of the beeping is (i.e. a dead battery, a dying unit, etc.). If fixing the root cause doesn't stop the beeping or the beeping isn't caused by something you can figure out (but it's not an emergency), you can continue with resetting the device.
-
2Press the Hush button. This will stop the alarm for 10 minutes, unless the smoke or debris is so bad that it's interfering with the alarm sensors. [7] X Research source

3Keep pressing the Hush button for as long as the false alarm is present. To end the hush period early, simply press the Hush button before the hush period is over.
