5 The Lord of the Rings Fun Facts
Can’t get enough of The Lord of the Rings
? We’ve got a few fun facts about J. R. R. Tolkien’s classic fantasy trilogy that may surprise and delight you!
1. Tolkien originally wanted to publish all three books in one volume.
Just imagine
what a door-stopper that thing would be.
2. The rise of environmentalism helped the trilogy rise in popularity.
After President Richard Nixon created the Environmental Protection Agency in the 1970s, many noticed environmentally friendly messaging in Tolkien’s trilogy, including his love of nature and his personification of trees as Ents. Consequently, book sales rose.
3. Tolkien wrote the poem “One Ring to Rule Them All” while he was in the bathtub. Not much more we can add to this one, except to recite the poem:
Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all. One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
4. The books’ maps of Middle-Earth were drawn by Tolkien’s son, Christopher.
He began drawing them over a decade before the books were published.
5. Tolkien wrote the trilogy with the support of his friend C. S. Lewis. At first, Tolkien was focused primarily on building the world of Middle-Earth, including genealogies and histories, but The Chronicles of Narnia author Lewis insisted him that he turn it all into a novel, which Tolkien did—“to keep [Lewis] quiet!”
