Easily Make an Invitation in Word

The easiest way to create an invitation on Microsoft Word is to use a template, which you can find under New . Search the invitation term that you're creating, then click Create . The template will open in a new document so you can edit it to include the details of your event, like the time, place, and dress code.

Using a Template

  1. As soon as you open Word, you'll see options for Home , New , and Open . The New icon is a piece of paper.
  2. Once you press Enter or Return on your keyboard, you'll see a bunch of templates on-screen. [1]
    • You can also adjust the search for the type of invitation, like "baby shower invitation" or "birthday invitation."
    • Find more templates in your web browser at https://create.microsoft.com/ .

  3. Some invites are smaller than others, and you'll usually see that noted next to the invitation title. For example, some say "2 cards per page", while others say "1 card per page."
    • The preview pane also tells you what size the card is once printed and what kind of paper it can be used with.
    • Click the x in the top right corner of the preview pane if you don't like the template and want to return to your search.
  4. It's at the bottom of the preview pane and will open the template in a new document.
  5. Depending on the template you selected, the graphics and text will be in text/image boxes. Click on a text to edit it. Wedding and Event Planner Michelle Cousins advises that you "convey all necessary details but also set the tone of the event," which means including the event name, date, time, venue, and dress code (if needed). [2]
    • Most templates will have graphics and art on them. You can adjust this to your liking by clicking on it and dragging the image around, or replace it with an image or art you want by using the Insert Picture feature of Word .
  6. Once you're done designing the invitation, save it by clicking File > Save . Locate the folder where you want to save the invitation file using the menu under the "Save As" header. Enter the invitation name as a filename, and click “Save.”
    • Now you can print the invitation by using your own printer at home, or save the file in a flash drive and take it to a professional printing shop. [3]

Starting From Scratch

  1. Double-click the Word icon on your desktop or in Finder to open Word, then open a new document.
    • Although it's much easier to start with a template, you can start from scratch using a blank document if you have a vision for the invitation in mind.
    • You can also create an invitation in the mobile app on your phone or tablet with a blank document.
  2. Creating an invitation with a blank document will allow you to be more creative, as it won't restrict you to the graphics or art already in a template. To insert your own image file, click the Insert tab on the toolbar at the top, then click Pictures and select an option. [4]
    • Once the image or clipart is inserted, you can move it around by dragging it to the location you want to place it or resize it by dragging its borders to the size you want.
  3. There are two ways you can add text: by using the “Text Box” feature or by typing the invitation information in. The Text Box feature will restrict the text you entered within a box while typing in will utilize the regular lines of the blank document. [5]
    • To create a Text Box, click “Insert” at the top, and then “Text Box.” It's in the Text group. Select a Text Box style from the drop-down menu, and then enter the information you want into the box that appears on the document.
    • Whether using the Text Box or just typing in the information, you can change the text font and size, as well as use boldface, italics, and underlines. You can also change the text color using the options under the Home tab at the top.
    • Make sure that the event information is provided in the invitation, like the event name, date, time, venue, and other details.
