Make the switch from Evernote to OneNote with these tips

Both Evernote and OneNote are powerful digital notebooks for notetaking, organizing, and sharing. Since Evernote changed its policy on multiple devices as well as its pricing plans for Plus and Premium, you may be considering a move to Microsoft's OneNote . While Microsoft once provided a simple migration tool, that tool was retired in September 2022. Fortunately, you can still migrate from Evernote to OneNote easily using a free open-source tool called Evernote2Onenote. This wikiHow article will show you how!

Importing Data from Evernote to OneNote

  • Download the Evernote2Onenote migration tool from https://github.com/stefankueng/EvImSync/releases .
  • Export your Evernote data as an ENEX file, then use Evernote2Onenote to import that file.
  • In Evernote2Onenote, select the exported ENEX file and click “open” to transfer the date to OneNote.
  1. To use the Evernote2Onenote migration tool, you'll need to export all of your data from Evernote to an ENEX database file. [1]
    • In Evernote, select the notebook you want to export.
    • Right-click the notebook and select Export…
    • Select the ENEX format. [2]
    • Choose which attributes to include in your data. If you have duplicate tags, you may accidentally migrate duplicate notes. Make sure to clean up your tags before exporting them.
    • Click Export .
    • Save the file in a location you'll remember.
  2. If the version of OneNote you've installed came from the Microsoft Store, you won't be able to migrate to OneNote with this tool. To make sure you have the right version, follow these steps to install OneNote:
    • Go to https://www.onenote.com and sign in with your Microsoft account .
    • Click Download at the top and save the installer to your PC.
    • Double-click OfficeSetup.exe and follow the on-screen instructions to install OneNote.

  3. You can get it from the developer's GitHub repository at https://github.com/stefankueng/EvImSync/releases .
    • To download the file, click Evernote2Onenote-1.3.3.zip . The number in the link will change as new versions are released.
  4. You won't need to install anything to use Evernote2Onenote, but you will need to unzip the file. Here's how:
    • Double-click the downloaded ZIP file.
    • Click Extract all in the toolbar.
    • Click the Extract button.
    • A new window will appear containing the migration tool, which is called Evernote2Onenote.exe.
  5. To do so, double-click Evernote2Onenote.exe in the extracted folder.
  6. By default, the tool is set to migrate all Evernote notes newer than January 1, 1799. So, unless you don't want to import everything , you can leave the defaults in place.
  7. This opens a File Explorer window.
  8. This imports your Evernote data into OneNote.
    • Depending on the size of your notebook, the migration may take several minutes.
    • One the migration is complete, you will find all migrated notes in OneNote.

  • Question
This article describes how to export an Evernote Notebook, set up OneNote & import into OneNote. I have multiple Evernote Notebooks. Do I simply repeat the import step? Does it preserve notebooks?

    Community Answer
Yes, once for each Evernote notebook. Each is set up as a new notebook in OneNote. The pages in the new notebook can be scrambled as a result of your tags in Evernote, so you may have to look around a bit for particular articles.
  • Question
I followed the instructions, including downloading OneNote for Windows 10 per the instructions. I used EvernoteToOnenote. I can find the imported notebooks but when I open them in OneNote they are empty.

I found this for a notebook that had no text in the notes, only pdf files. Otherwise, all went well with no errors. Other notes with text plus pdf files were OK; so perhaps adding a word or 2 of text would help.
  • Question
Where in OneNote do I find the migrated files. I have followed all the steps but no files appear.

Each Evernote notebook will appear as a brand new notebook at the bottom of the list in OneNote.
