Group texts can be a fun way to keep in touch with friends and family and plan activities. However, the notifications can be annoying when the group chat is particularly active. Luckily, there is a solution. This wikiHow article teaches you how to mute a group text on Android.

Quick Steps

  1. Open Google Messages .
  2. Tap the group chat you want to mute.
  3. Tap the icon with three dots ( â‹® ) in the upper-right corner.
  4. Tap Group details .
  5. Tap Notifications .
  6. Tap Silent .

Using Google Messages

    • If Google Messages opens to a conversation, tap the back arrow to return to the messages menu.

Using Samsung Messages

  1. It has an icon that resembles a speech bubble. Samsung Messages is the default messaging app that comes pre-installed on Samsung Galaxy phones.
    • If Samsung Messages opens to a conversation, tap the back arrow to return to the Conversations page.
  2. It's the first tab at the bottom of the page. This displays all your text conversations
  3. This displays the conversation.
  4. It's the icon with three dots in the upper-right corner. This displays a drop-down menu.
  5. It's in the lower-right corner. This turns notifications off and mutes the chat. If the bell is highlighted in blue, notifications are on. If the bell icon is not highlighted, notifications are off. Tap this icon anytime you want to mute or unmute the conversation.
    • Alternatively, you can tap Notification sound in this menu and tap Silent . This will allow you to receive notifications but not hear an alert sound.

Using WhatsApp

  1. The WhatsApp icon looks like a white telephone icon in a green speech bubble on your Apps list.
  2. It's the first tab at the bottom of the page. It's in the lower-left corner.
    • If WhatsApp opens up to the wrong conversation, tap the back button to go back to your Chats list.
  3. This will open the conversation in full-screen.
    • You can search for a chat by tapping the magnifying glass icon in the upper-right corner of your CHATS list.
  4. This button is in the upper-right corner of the group conversation. It will open a drop-down menu.
  5. This will open a new pop-up window.
  6. You can select 8 Hours , 1 Week , or Always .
  7. It's in the lower-right corner of the pop-up window. It will save your preferences and mute this group chat. You will not receive notifications from this chat for the amount of time you have specified.
    • If you want to unmute this conversation, tap the three vertical dots icon, and then select Unmute on the drop-down menu.

Using Textra

  1. The Textra icon looks like two white, horizontal lines in a blue speech bubble on your Apps list. Textra will open up to your inbox.
    • If Textra opens up to a conversation, tap the back button to go back to your inbox.
  2. This will open the conversation in full-screen.
    • You can search for a chat by tapping the magnifying glass icon in the upper-right corner of your inbox.
  3. This button is located next to the pin and trash icons at the top of your screen. This will mute the group chat, and take you back to the text conversation. You will see a green notification box confirming the chat is "Muted" at the bottom of your screen.
    • You can unmute the chat at any time by tapping the bell icon again.
