Do you have to get first place on the 100cc leaf cup to unlock dry bones?

Yes, or race in 1,050 races (Grand Prix or VS Race). Battle Mode only counts when getting Mii Outfit B, and Time Trials and Tournaments do not count. You can race in single player, local multiplayer, or online multiplayer. Just remember that this will take a long time, and you should win the 100cc leaf cup if you can't race that much.
