  • Question
How do I build a ported box for a 15" subwoofer?
    Community Answer
This method would work -- you just need to adjust the measurements to fit a 15" driver. It's probably easier to look up a guide designed specifically for a sub though. There are loads of them on car audio sites.
  • Question
What is poly fill (referenced in step 12 of how to build a speaker box)?
    Community Answer
It's Polyester fluff for filling stuffed animals, comforters, and I assume for stapling to the inside of this box. Ask someone at a craft store or in the craft section of Walmart.
  • Question
How do I build an 8 inch speaker box?
    Community Answer
Just follow the steps in the article.
  • Question
Is it possible to connect a 150 watt speaker to a 10-15 watt speaker?
    Community Answer
If you are talking about hooking up a pair of 15 watt speakers to a 150 watt amplifier, the answer is no. It will result in catastrophic failure.
  • Question
I own a set of Bose 901 speakers that have drivers protruding from the back of the speakers. I need new boxes for these speakers. Are there specialized building methods to incorporate into the new boxes of these speakers? I've contacted Bose, but received no reply.
    Community Answer
Yes, they have special design and construction. You won't be able to replicate it on your own.
  • Question
    My amplifier is 2 x 750 watts at 8 ohms. Can I use 4 x 500 watts speakers at 8 ohms?
    Emmanuel Cavalcante
    Community Answer
No. If you connect two speakers in parallel, you will have an equivalent of one 1000 w speaker at 4 ohms. If you connect them in series, you will have an equivalent of one 1000 w speaker at 16 ohms. In doing that, you will either reduce or damage the amp performance.
  • Question
Where can I find poly fill?
    Community Answer
You can find poly fill at Walmart, Michael's, or any fabric store, like JoAnns.
  • Question
Can I do this to a Bluetooth speaker to improve its sound?
    Community Answer
Yes, but it's often easier to put a portable speaker in a bucket or box to give it some oomph. A box like this is really only for a 'normal' speaker. If you are planning on disassembling the Bluetooth speaker and mount the actual driver, then yes, this should work.
  • Question
    If I build a box and it requires a 4" by 16" pipe, can I use 2" by 8"?
    Community Answer
You can, but there will be more port noise.
  • Question
Why do I need to fill the speaker box with paper?
    Community Answer
It makes the subwoofer act like it is in a bigger box. It gives you deeper bass and a tighter bass response in a sealed package.
  • Question
How do I size a box when building a speaker box?
    Community Answer
You need the Thiele Small specs for your driver(s), which should be available on the manufacturer's website, and access to enclosure design softwarr. You may be able to find free software on some websites. A distant second choice would be to use the dimensions of a production cabinet that has the same drivers.
  • Question
Do both speakers need separate airspace when building a speaker box?
    Community Answer
If you are using two woofers, yes, generally you can put them both in the same airspace, but they should both be roughly the same size and compliance, otherwise the back wave from the larger speaker could overdrive the smaller one. If you use a midrange speaker you should separate the airspace from the woofer. Often this is done by using a cup behind the midrange, sealed to prevent interference from the woofer. Most tweeters are sealed on the back, so those can be placed directly on the baffle with the main woofer.
  • Question
How would I build a wall in my car for four 15 inch speakers?
    Community Answer
There are much better ways to get a sub woofer sound. There are some smaller speakers designed to produce good bass sound. Using 4 15" speakers in a car seems excessive and could be hazardous to your hearing. (I am speaking from experience, 66 yr old rocker.)
  • Question
What type of wood should I use?
    Community Answer
Most wood would be fine for this project. Something strong would make it last a long time. Soft woods, such as cedar or pine are easy to work with and are very strong.
  • Question
Can I rebuild a speaker box out of oak and get the same sound?
    Community Answer
The article here says yes, but different woods will make different tones. Think about how Stradivarius made violins like everyone he was competing with, yet his varnish changed the sound making the instrument the most sought after today.
  • Question
How would I build a very short sub woofer box for an 18" speaker?
    Shrutay Swain
    Community Answer
You can use the linkwitz transform circuit and the linkwitz transform spread sheet calculator to design the filter for an 18 inch subwoofer in a very small box.
  • Question
How do I build a solar speaker box?
    Shrutay Swain
    Community Answer
You need a solar panel, a pack of rechargeable batteries and a battery charger circuit meant for solar panel. Secondly, you need to add a buck converter to achieve the desired voltage to drive your class D amplifier, which will power the speakers. You can mount the solar panel on top of the speaker box.
  • Question
How do I wire an 8 inch speaker to two tweeters and a horn?
    Shrutay Swain
    Community Answer
You need a 3 way passive crossover to connect the horn tweeters and the woofer. You'd need to determine your crossover frequency based on individual driver specs and, if possible, take measurements in a box before designing or procuring crossovers.
  • Question
What can I make a speaker box out of?
    Shrutay Swain
    Community Answer
MDF or HDF are the best options. Or else, you can go for compressed woods or Baltic birch plywoods.
  • Question
What does your warning mean, "do not build a box with walls of equal dimensions"? And can you build a box bigger? Would it improve the sound or make it worse?
    Shrutay Swain
    Community Answer
Equal dimensions will cause standing waves, follow the golden rule in box design. Make box volume only after knowing the TS parameters and calculating the volume through a software program like winisd and simulate the frequency response before finalizing on a box volume. Box volume made without the manufacturer guidelines or without the software will produce meagre results.
  • Question
Can I make a speaker have high bass?
    Shrutay Swain
    Community Answer
Yes you ca. You need to use subwoofer meant for producing low frequency and you also need a suitable active crossover to achieve the desired results. Try crossing subwoofer below 100 to 120hz.
  • Question
Is a ported box louder than sealed?
    Drew Hawkins1
    Community Answer
A ported box will produce deeper bass notes and are better for subwoofers. They're also generally louder than a sealed speaker box. However, sealed speaker boxes will produce better and clearer sounding high notes.
  • Question
How big should my speaker box be?
    Drew Hawkins1
    Community Answer
Use your speaker to help determine how big the box should be. You can figure the depth of the speaker box by adding 2 inches (5 cm) to the depth of the speaker. Then, use the speaker’s height and length measurements as the box’s internal height and length dimensions. Multiply the depth, height, and length to determine the internal volume of the box so it produces quality sound.
  • Question
What is the best wood to use to make a speaker box?
    Drew Hawkins1
    Community Answer
Medium-density fiberboard, or MDF, is commonly used to make a speaker box. However, baltic birch plywood produces a better sound clarity and tone, but it's more expensive. You can also use standard plywood to make a speaker box.
