  • Question
What's a good way to convince my mom? Bullying happens a lot to me.
    Community Answer
That in itself should be a good reason. Explain that you will be more comfortable and able to learn better when you aren't having to deal with bullies. And the learning experience will be focused on you, so your grades will likely go up and the teacher can focus on you as an individual. If your parents are worried about you not socializing with other kids, be open to the possibility of signing up for some activity, club, or camp where there are other kids, or at least have a friend or two to hang out with.
  • Question
My parents think I won't have any friends if I homeschool, what should I tell them?
    Community Answer
Say something like, "Well I can still make friends, and I will still do some activities outside the house, so I have multiple opportunities to make new friends and interact with people."
  • Question
Both of my parents have a busy work schedule. What should I do?
    Community Answer
Talk to them about online schooling. This would allow you to stay home and learn while they are at work. Before bringing it up, do more chores and be on your best behavior.
  • Question
What if your sisters get in the way?
    Community Answer
If your siblings get in the way, write a speech to prepare yourself to say something like "Yes but if I am home schooled I will also have more time to around to do the house chores". And if this doesn't work, and your parents agree with your siblings, then use the facts about what is wrong at your school and what being home schooled will improve for you as an individual. It is not unusual for one sibling to be homeschooled and another sibling to attend a school.
  • Question
What if my parents say they don't have the money for the textbooks?
    Community Answer
Offer to save up money to help pay for the books, or see if any are available to borrow from the library. This will show that you are responsible and serious about homeschooling.
  • Question
What if your mom says that if you at homeschooled, you won't be social?
    Community Answer
Offer to participate in social activities (e.g., sports, a club, camp) outside of your schooling. Also, look online to see if there are any groups/meetups for homeschooled kids in your area - you could get to know some other homeschooled kids.
  • Question
What can I do if my mom said no, but my dad said he wasn't sure?
    Community Answer
Keep talking to you dad about it and hopefully, he will convince your mom. Also, it wouldn't hurt to do some homework on what it would take to be homeschooled, how to find the materials, and a checklist of needed subjects. Show your parents you are ready put in the work.
  • Question
My mom said homeschooling isn't healthy because I wouldn't interact with other kids but I really want to be home schooled what should I do.
    Community Answer
Pull up statistics about home-schooled standouts. Many have gone on to be very successful. Let her know you will be socializing with people from school at night and on weekends. Join some clubs and community center classes to emphasize your socialization efforts.
  • Question
What do do if you have a very dramatic best friend?
    Community Answer
You're already aware that your best friend is very dramatic, so be prepared for your friend to act up. Have a good explanation ready for this person and let your friend know that you'll have plenty of time to catch up after school, on weekends and during vacation time. If your friend cries or goes on and on, explain that this is the best choice for your current needs.
  • Question
What can I do if I want to be homeschooled, but both of my parents work?

  • Question
School makes me anxious and makes me want to die, I want to home school but my parents and therapist don't care and say that I have to learn to deal with this. What do I do?
    Community Answer
Keep telling them how you feel. Tell anyone that will listen. This is a case where it's best to be persistent. Try to be specific about how you're feeling, especially if you're suicidal. If your parents won't listen to you, talk to a teacher, principal, guidance counselor, or anyone else you think might be able to help.
  • Question
How long does it take to get into homeschooling?
    Community Answer
This varies from state to state. You'll have to consult the educational branch of your state's website for details in your region.
  • Question
Making friends is really hard for me at my school, and I feel like it is not good for me mentally. Should I do online school or am I being dramatic?
    Community Answer
It's hard for most people, even if it doesn't seem like it. Try joining social or academic clubs at school that relate to your interests. This way you'll probably meet some people you have something in common with. Running away from a problem is virtually never the answer, and how do you expect to make friends if you completely separate yourself from your peers? I'd strongly encourage you to keep trying to make friends.
  • Question
I've asked my parents like a million times but they say it will be too hard. I'm thinking about asking about online homeschool - should I?
    Community Answer
If your parents think it will be too hard, they mean it. At this point, it isn't just about you, it's about the family as a whole and its ability to thrive as well. If you can show them that online homeschool will actually provide you with all that is needed without them having to do too much of the teaching, it might reassure them. However, don't be surprised if they think it is still easier for you to attend school. Remember that homeschooling requires a lot of effort from your parents, and this may be what concerns them.

  • Question
What if my parents yell at me and get angry when I ask them about it?
    Rhea K.R. The Great
    Community Answer
The best way to convey something to them without talking to them face-to-face is to leave a written message for them with the points you want to talk about. To be "professional" and make sure they actually read the letter, physically write a letter with a blue/black pen. Don't use a red pen as it is a shocking color that symbolizes anger. Start with something positive, like "I know you love me and care for me, so please read this letter thoroughly." Talk to them calmly later.

I’m bullied. My parents say it’s part of life and I shouldn’t care what they say. What should I do?
    Community Answer
Your parents are sort of right, though it really depends on how severe the bullying is. Talk to your teachers and counselors at school and ask for help or advice. Or if you're really determined to be homeschooled, ask a teacher or counselor to help you talk to your parents.

Remember that opportunities can be a variety of things, like local sports, learning an instrument, or even taking a new language can be plenty of new experiences. Tell her that some homeschooling methods can be taken online so it won’t be all pressure on her and her time all gone. Just do your research and keep explaining!

    Community Answer
Tell her the truth! Tell her you’re getting super stressed from school, and this online school is good and will be best for you. Talk to her about your problems and she should understand! Prepare yourself first: write down pros- but don’t forget the cons, and find reasons why it works well over other kids too, etc.. You can do this! Just tell her how you feel!
  • Question
What if you want to be homeschooled to be able to get better at your sport and your mum says she has no time to homeschool both you and your sister?
    Julia Wick
    Community Answer
Something that might help you in sports is taking classes or just practicing at home. Before you decide anything look at state requirements; for example, my state requires you must be homeschooled by the 1st of October on your beginning year. I understand your mother doesn’t have time to homeschool you, and a lot of parents don’t, but you can take online classes and go to some educating places, like a local library tutor. Make sure you have a valid reason to be homeschooled before you ask your mother, because it seems it might not be the best fit at the moment.

I really want to be home schooled because someone in my friend group randomly didn't like me and kicked me out of the group and now I'm a loner. What should I do?
    Baby Yoda's Food
    Community Answer
If someone kicked you out of a friend group, then that is not a valid reason to be homeschooled. Good reasons are being bullied, being unable to focus all the time, and feeling unsafe. You'll find new friends again and in the meantime, focus hard on your studies.

What should I do if I have read all of these and want to be home schooled but still don't know how to confront my parents and tell them about my problems and all that?
    Baby Yoda's Food

If you have written down what you want to say, practice reading it in front of a mirror. The more you practice, the more confident you will become about talking to your parents.
