Spare fabric can work really well! Just cut it into 1 by 8-10 in (2.54 by 20.32-25.4 cm) strips, which you can use as fabric curlers.

Not at all! Sleeping with fabric curlers is a great way to get curls without having to use a curling iron. Just make sure that the fabric is tied loosely enough to pull out in the morning.
  • Question
How do you curl really thick hair without a curling iron?
    Community Answer
You can use any of the methods above if you have thick hair. However, you may need to use more socks/rags, create more braids/buns, or roll more pin curls than those people who have fine or thin hair. Work with smaller sections -- think about 1-inch -- to ensure that the curls hold.
  • Question
Do I have to use hairspray on method one?
    Community Answer
No. When your curls start to get loose, scrunch them. This will work, because if your hair is curly by doing a method one, it will be as if it was naturally curly and scrunching always defines your curls.
  • Question
What if I have naturally wavy or curly hair?
    Community Answer
If you have naturally wavy or curly hair, you can probably get away with the scrunching method. Start with wet hair and apply a texturizing spray or mousse to the length of your hair. Use your hands to scrunch your locks to help play up its natural texture, and then allow it to air dry the rest of the way.
  • Question
What if I have thick and curly hair?
    Community Answer
Wash your hair, and while it is wet, start crushing it with your hands the way you crush paper. This will avoid your hair getting fluffy and unmanageable while giving it the intended texture.
  • Question
How could I curl a relatively short pixie cut?
    Community Answer
You could use bobby pins. I would recommend using any of the methods that involve tying your hair up, especially into knots, as that should be fairly simple to do even with short hair.
  • Question
Did this work for anyone else?
    Community Answer
Yes. I recommend you do braids or twisted buns. Remember, the more buns and braids, the tighter and smaller the curl.
  • Question
Is it better to use a braid or a bun?
    Community Answer
Braids are better for tighter waves. The more braids, the wavier. Buns are better for loose, natural looking waves.
  • Question
I can't get hairspray and none of these methods have worked. What else can I try?
    Community Answer
You can try a curl cream of just a heat curler or wand. Maybe try French or Dutch braids.
