It depends on the quantity of ice build-up, the room temperature, and the method used to defrost the freezer. It can take more then 24 hours if a lot of ice has built-up and you're just turning the freezer off and opening the door.

Assuming you turned the freezer off to defrost it, then switch it back on, place all trays back in if necessary, and close. Leave closed for about 30 minutes to let it cool down before putting food back in.

It should be fine - just make sure it doesn't get moldy. To prevent this, remove all food prior to turning it off, and clean the fridge. Don't forget to leave the door open, if only an inch or two, to allow the flow of air.

Chip away at the ice if you can safely do so without damaging the freezer. If the door still will not close, consider defrosting the freezer to get rid of the ice. Just make sure after defrosting that you do not re-freeze food that was previously in the freezer.
