Don’t overlook the corners in your home and leave them empty! You can enhance a corner in your home by adding a plant, decorative vases, corner storage cabinet/shelves, a floor lamp, or even coat rack if needed.

To use a room in two different ways, you need to have furniture pieces that can be used in two different ways. For example, a day bed can be used as a sofa and a bed; both needed for a living room and bedroom space. Murphy beds are also a great option for multi-function spaces. They can be tucked away during the day and pulled down when needed at night. Another trick is using a cluster of accent tables as a coffee table for the living room that can be separated and used as multiple nightstands for the bedroom space.

A narrow living room can be challenging - but if you lay out your furniture so a good walking flow is there, then it will look more appealing. Focus on minimal decor and use items you love. A large art print on the wall can be better than a busy gallery wall which may make the space seem more closed in.

You can arrange your living room so that it feels best to you. If you need more walking room, try eliminating pieces of furniture that you don't necessarily need. Arrange the room so there is a comfortable place to have a conversation, watch TV, or look out the window to a view. There should always be room to walk between the coffee table and sofa and around chairs.

To design a house interior, you have to start with an overall idea. Pick a style or look you want. For instance, maybe you like a rustic look - first pick colors you want in the house, then pick wall paint, light fixtures, and big pieces of furniture. Once that is in place you can decorate with accents and accessories - it's easier to start big and work your way down to smaller items.
  • Question
My family room is 25' by 25'; the fireplace is in center of wall with a window on each side. The T.V. is mounted on the corner next to one window. There are French doors and a home office on a side wall. On the opposite wall of the French doors, there is a chandelier. How do I arrange this floor plan?
    Community Answer
The room was designed for you; you'd just be throwing furniture into the middle of everything. Try some large chairs facing the TV; a couch facing the fireplace and a table with small or side chairs across from the French doors.
  • Question
How do I design a wall with a fireplace and TV on top?
    Community Answer
Sounds like it's mostly done. Obviously, you'd want a fireplace mantle and surround for the fireplace. This makes it easier for the brain to focus on the intended focal point and the TV will then be provided a base or pedestal for when it's the area of focus. Plus, the mantle will provide the much needed texture between the flat faces of the appliances.
  • Question
My living room has two doors on different walls and also two windows on different walls. I have one alcove and need to put a dining table in this room. How?
    Community Answer
The length of the table should run with the length of the room. This, will also allow you to offset the table to one side or off-center to keep a pathway unobstructed. You may be able to put the table under a window to keep it away from the traffic of the doors.
  • Question
What kind of coffee table should I get for a living room with a sofa and love seat? I looked at round and rectangle tables. The living room is average size.

    Community Answer
Maybe go with a rectangle table because rounded ones take up a bit more room and seating might be a hassle. However, it really comes down to personal taste, so go with what you like most.
  • Question
How do I decorate an L-shaped living room?
    Juliana Doerner
    Community Answer
Get an L-shaped couch if you have that in your budget. You can also use other couches and chairs. If money is tight, check out your local thrift shop and see what they may have. Another thing you can do is split the room. Maybe you want one section to be a book nook while the other is a place to lounge and hang out.
