    Expert Answer
Definitely. It’s really helpful to mentally prepare for the move and consider which muscles you’ll need to engage and the power you’ll need to complete the move. Visualizing beforehand, having a spotter help you through the motions, and then watching it back on video can really help you perfect a new skill. Even watching others do that skill can help you figure out how to do it yourself.
  • Question
Do I need to swing my arms to do a back tuck?
    Community Answer
Unless you are skilled to the point you don't need to, then yes. This is because swinging gives you the momentum to flip over.
  • Question
If I don't have a mat can I comfortably do it on a carpet?
    Community Answer
You can but it's not as safe as a mat. If you fall, you could get rug burn or hurt yourself. Perhaps put down some pillows or cushions as well.
  • Question
Do you have to use your arms to bring your knees to your chest?
    Community Answer
Yes. First jump up, then use your arms to tuck in your knees. The tighter you tuck, the higher you'll go.
  • Question
Is there a possibility of breaking my ankle or a bone?
    Community Answer
If you don't land straight, it may be a possibility. However, it's not usual to break anything provided you're properly prepared and ready to try this move. You do need to get a lot of practice before you try doing a full one.
  • Question
I can do the back tuck on the trampoline, but am afraid to try it on the ground. How can I overcome this fear?
    Community Answer
Practice a lot with a spotter, then try from higher ground. Keep going until you are super comfortable and can do it properly (by yourself) five times in a row. Then, being REALLY careful, try it on level ground. Make sure your hands are always ready to save you.
  • Question
How do I get a higher set?
    Community Answer
To get a set you want to have just jumped into the back tuck, you will want to have you arms up and then quickly snap them down to your knees which will let you have a higher back tuck and a faster rotation.
  • Question
How do I jump higher so I can have enough space to turn?
    Community Answer
You will have to build up your leg muscles so that you can jump higher. On a daily basis.
  • Question
Is there a risk of hurting my neck? If so how can it be prevented?
    Community Answer
Tiny risk! If you have done a back handspring before you are already prepared to do this. Never bail. It would hurt worse to bail than if you actually go for it.
  • Question

  • Question
Would there be a chance of falling off the trampoline or getting an injury when landing?

  • Question
Can you fall on your face?
    Sarah
    Community Answer

  • Question
I am trying out for competitive cheer -- will a back tuck be useful?
    Community Answer
You don't need a tuck you want to get it but a standing tuck is level 4 and you don't have to be on a level 4 team, you can be on 1, 2 or 3.
  • Question
Do I need to swing my arms back when I am doing a back tuck?
    Community Answer
Before you jump back into it, you should swing your arms, so it has more power and you jump higher. This is only for some people, though. If you can jump without swinging your arms and still have a high jump, don't swing you arms.
  • Question
I can land my tucks but I stumble out of them. Also, I'm afraid of bailing, and I'm not the most consistent. What do I do?
    Sarah
    Community Answer
You should go back a step to doing it off a mat. Start very high, then slowly lower the mats until you are on ground level. Then try doing the reverse, from the floor onto the mats.
  • Question

  • Question
How much harder is it than doing it on a trampoline?

  • Question

  • Question
Do I have to know how to do a backbend in order to do a back tuck?
    Community Answer
No, you don't have to know how to do a backbend in order to do a back tuck.
  • Question
Should I practice on a trampoline or the ground first?
    Community Answer
Always gradually build up to doing it on the ground, it is too dangerous to just go for it as you could hit your head off of the ground and cause serious injury. You will know if you are capable of it if you try a standing back tuck on a trampoline (don't bounce) and land it every time. After you can do that do it off of a raised surface onto the ground (preferably with a gymnastics mat underneath you).
  • Question
My coach always says my hips go forward before I actually go back, how do I prevent that?
    Community Answer
Keep your entire body in a ball or all close together instead of keeping it straight like a back handspring.
  • Question
Why can't I gain enough height?
    Community Answer
There could be several reasons. You should practice it on a trampoline. This will help you jump much higher.
  • Question
I don't fear in the backhand spring, but in the back tuck it looks like I'd fall and break my neck. Any advice?
    Community Answer
You wont - if you fall, your hands are there for a reason. If you're scared, you can try it on a trampoline while jumping really high so you have enough room to flip. Make sure you swing your arms to rotate faster. If you need help, ask a coach or someone with knowledge in gymnastics to spot you.
  • Question
Could I fall during this skill?
    Community Answer
If you don't jump high enough, then you could potentially fall.
  • Question
I'm advanced with my back handspring, but how do I keep my head in one position?
    Community Answer
When you do a back handspring, don't look at your hands, look straight.
  • Question
I can do a front flip on my trampoline, and I'd like to learn how to do a back tuck, but I have no spotter. I've never done it before, but I have gone to a gymnastics club for a while. Help?
    Community Answer
First off, make sure you have the correct equipment. It’s good to practice on the trampoline or on a very soft mat. Also, make sure you have all the skills necessary. You might want to have a back walkover or a back handspring, but definitely have a backwards roll. This will really help you, even though a backwards roll is on the ground.
  • Question
What is the difference between a back flip and back tuck? They look the same to me.
    Community Answer
They are the same skill, but a back tuck is a more technical term for it. A back flip could be any sort of flip backward, not just a tuck.
  • Question
I want to get a standng back tuck over the weekend. I already have really high back handsprings but I alway put my hands down at the last minute. Do you have some tips and tricks I can use?
    Community Answer
Put a bundle of grass or several scrunchies in your hands so you have to really think before putting your hands down (as you'll drop what you're holding).
  • Question
Where can I find a spotter?
    Community Answer
Look around for gymnastics experts, coaches, trusted adults, or just good friends. Anyone can be a spotter for you as long as they're willing to help.
  • Question
I keep landing too early and I crack my back and wind myself; any advice?
    Community Answer
You have to make sure you’re jumping high enough. If you don’t jump high enough, you will land too early. If you are trying to jump as high as you can but are still not high enough, try and jump on the trampoline. If the trampoline doesn’t work, just try and tuck in a bit more.
