QuestionWhat is the difference between a food web and a food chain?Justine Borzumato is a Biology Teacher at the Wardlaw+Hartridge School in Edison, New Jersey. Justine has been teaching biology since 2015 and has taught courses including AP Biology, Honors Biology, Epidemiology, and Anatomy and Physiology. She received her Bachelor of Science in Biology from Loyola University Maryland and a Master of Science in Biology from New York University. So in a typical food chain, where this thing eats this thing and this thing eats another thing, there's no variety in that, and it's a linear sequence where one organism eats another. In a food web, for example, we humans eat a variety of plants, and we might also eat animals. So the chain is not so linear. It's more like a web where there are many different branches coming out, and they're connecting in different locations. It's not just one organism that eats only one other organism.

QuestionWhat are secondary consumers?Community AnswerThe first animal to eat the producer in a food chain (not web) is usually an herbivore because it eats the producer (plants), the secondary consumer is a carnivore because it eats the primary consumer (the animal).
-
QuestionDon't you need pictures sometimes?Community AnswerNo, you don't have to put pictures in it as long as the arrows or the diagram is neatly written. Pictures can help make your web look nicer though.
-
QuestionDo I put the sun at the top or bottom?Robin SagerCommunity AnswerUnlike a food chain or pyramid, you can place your sun anywhere on the page. The key is to make the connections between the sun and the animals or organisms. If you are trying to recreate an exact environment on your page, then placing the sun at the top would obviously be best.
-
QuestionDo we have to include an exact number of producers in the web?Robin SagerCommunity AnswerNo, there is no exact number requirement for producers or any other part of a food web. Generally, it's a good idea to include as many producers as you can think of for a particular environment. The more producers that you include, the more connections you can create.
-
QuestionHow can I draw a food web with three food chains?Community AnswerFor a food web with multiple food chains, all you have to do is put all the producers at the bottom, all the primary consumers second etc.
-
QuestionIf the sun is the main source for the producer, where should I put the sun in the food web?Community AnswerYou should put it on the bottom, because it will make it more neat. You could also put it with the producers, if you won't lose any points.
-
QuestionHow would I make a food web for pizza?Community AnswerPizza isn't a living thing, so it wouldn't appear in a biological food web as it is. However, you could make a fake, funny, or pretend food web that includes pizza. You could also create food webs including some of the animals that supply ingredients for pizza. For example, you could draw a food web including a pig, as pork is used to make pepperoni and sausage.
-
QuestionWhere are the decomposers in this food web?Community AnswerThere are none. If you do have decomposers in your food web, you can just include them on the side.
-
QuestionDo you put dirt if something eats dirt?Robin SagerCommunity AnswerGenerally, you want to only include living organisms and animals within your food web. However, you could include dirt by adding in a listing for bacteria. Dirt contains bacteria, so you could add arrows to show that certain animals are broken down by bacteria, but eat bacteria as well via dirt.
-
QuestionWhich way do I point the arrows if the red fox eats raccoons, crayfish, grasshoppers, red clover, meadow voles and gray squirrels?Community AnswerThe arrow's head is always pointed at the animal that is being eaten.
-
QuestionWhy are food webs needed?Community AnswerFood webs are important tools in understanding that plants are the foundation of all ecosystems and food chains, sustaining life by providing nourishment and oxygen needed for survival and reproduction. A food web also allows us to visualize the relationships between the species within a system and it illustrates the complexity of even the smallest ecosystems.
-
QuestionDo I need to add decomposers to a food web?Community AnswerDecomposers are not often put into standard food webs; however, if you want to be thorough, you should add them.
-
QuestionDo the secondary consumers have to be herbivores or can they be omnivores?Emily WestCommunity AnswerThey are either carnivores or omnivores. Either way, they eat herbivores, such as snakes eating grass-eating mice or krill eating zooplankton.
-
QuestionHow is a food web constructed?Drew Hawkins1Community AnswerA food web is constructed by writing out the primary producers, herbivores, omnivores, and carnivores of the habitat you're illustrating. You can then connect them with arrows or lines to show the predators and their prey.
-
QuestionWhat is a food web in an ecosystem?Drew Hawkins1Community AnswerA food web is an illustrative tool you can create and use to show the predator and prey relationships between organisms in an ecosystem.
-
QuestionWhere are humans on the food web?Drew Hawkins1Community AnswerDepending on the ecosystem your food web is illustrating, humans would fall under the omnivore category. However, in most environments, humans don't have any natural predators.
-
QuestionIs tumbleweed a decomposer?Community AnswerNo, tumbleweed is not a decomposer.
-
QuestionWhat are the types of decomposers? Where would I put them on a food web?Community AnswerThere are lots of decomposers, like bacteria and fungi. Put them on the end of a food web because animals need to be consumed before their bodies are basically "cleansed."
-
QuestionWhich living thing should be the greatest in number in my food web? Why?Community AnswerThe decomposers should be in the greatest number because all animal s(once dead) become bacteria, which is a decomposer.
-
QuestionDo I need a certain amount of consumers?Community AnswerNo, you can add as many as you want. There is no hard and fast rule for this.
-
QuestionWhat is a decomposer?ths 130028Community AnswerDecomposers are organisms that decompose or break down another dead organism's body and release nutrients into the soil. These nutrients are absorbed by producers and so the food chain (or food web) goes on.
-
QuestionIf I don't want to put the decomposers at the top, where would I put them?Mb_b5bb2611ee23Community AnswerOn the left side will be okay and on the right side will also be okay! Or you can just put it on the bottom. If you don’t want to just don’t do it.
