When I insert an mp4 video file into a PowerPoint 2010 file slide using the first method outlined here, the video does not play smoothly. The audio of the video plays, but the image either stays black or moves very slowly. Is there another way to insert an mp4 video file?

How do I make a full-screen video on PowerPoint?

Simply select the video within the slide; this will make a new tab appear across the top called Playback. Within that tab is a tick box called "Play Full Screen"; once this is checked, when you view the slide show the video will appear full screen.

Select the video, and rotate it like a textbox. Take note that the video itself should be embedded to the PowerPoint presentation, so earlier versions like PowerPoint 2007 cannot do this.

Will a video work embedded in PowerPoint work if I take the powerpoint slideshow on a usb and use it on a computer that doesn't have the original video file in it?

As long as it is embedded, it should play. However, linked videos would not work, because they are not present on the PowerPoint file.

How do I turn off the "video progression" bar while the video is playing?

Unfortunately, there is no way to do that, at least not until PowerPoint 2013, where multiple displays are introduced to avoid showing video progress bars while presenting. If it is necessary (for PowerPoint 2010 and earlier), play the video using Alt + P, and avoid using mouse, or animate the 'play video' as part of your slideshow.

What do I do if the images I add to a slide that is playing a video don't appear?

Make sure that the video does not block the image you are showing. Bring the image to the front (and if necessary, animate it so it would show up after the video playback). If you cannot do that, try to drag the video to the side, then select the image. Or use selection pane, then do the things aforementioned.
