First, disconnect everything from the Xbox including the power, TV cable and the external hard drive (if one is connected). Then, connect the power cable and turn it on. If you do not get the red ring of death, then turn it off and connect the TV cable. Keep turning off and connecting one cable at a time until one of them triggers the red ring of death. This will be the faulty part.

My black Xbox 360 will turn on normally, then after a few seconds it shuts down. What can I do?

Wrap it in a towel whilst turned on. The heat re-seats the solder joints on the circuit board and keeps it running a bit longer. This worked for me. A heat gun on the circuit board for a bit whilst it's turned off helps too. Just don't let it get too hot.

If the button is lit and you hear the normal sounds from the DVD drive, everything should be okay except for the video signal. check if your TV matches the standards of the console (NTSC, PAL, etc.) also, you can try a different type of video output (RCA vs. HDMI.) If using HDMI, make sure the cable isn't broken by trying a different one. Now the last option sounds obvious: turn everything off, and turn everything back on again. Many people think It doesn't solve the problem most of the time, but you'd be surprised.
