We just purchased a home sitting in a half acre property. The lawn used to be really dry and had a lot of hedges. We cleared the hedges and watered the lawn everyday. We have a lot of crab grass and I was advised to reseed during fall. Is there anything else I can do to grow regular lawn grass?

Keep trying to control the crabgrass by either using herbicides and digging it out by hand. Repair the soil in the damaged areas and re-seed both spring and fall if necessary.

Usually a good pre-emergent and post-emergent application of chemicals once undesirable vegetation is under control will work well. You may need to apply a mid-season broadleaf herbicide, but the more chemical treatment done, the more resistant the weeds become.

Our lawn is infested by ants. How do we get rid of them?

You are most likely dealing with funnel ants. They can be treated by a pest controller but if you can annoy them enough they will move to another area of land to live. Regular mowing will knock the anthills over and may cause them to move. The ants have a symbiotic relationship with roots of weeds and grass so cutting it shorter will give smaller root systems to host the ants. Hot water poured down the anthills when you first notice them is great prevention of an infestation.

You can use a rotovator to break up the ground first, and then lightly compact it. If the soil is very poor quality, you can purchase and add some top soil on it.
