  • Question
How do I keep broccoli florets green and fresh???
    Community Answer
Put your head of broccoli, stem down, into a bowl filled with 1/2 inch or so of water. The "bushy" part of the broccoli should point up, out of the bowl. Refrigerate. Storing your broccoli this way should keep it fresh for about 5 to 7 days.
  • Question
Can broccoli be unsafe after a long storage period? I had sealed and it has a strong odor.
    Community Answer
A strong odor is an indication that it's best to discard the broccoli. Broccoli doesn't keep well for long periods and once it yellows, it is no longer appealing for serving, although can be used in soups and stews. However, if it smells, has signs of white or fuzzy growth on it, it is no longer safe to eat and should be tossed into the compost or thrown away.
  • Question
Is it safe to use a bag of broccoli which has been left in the car for 6 to 7 hours?
    Community Answer
This is likely a judgement call, and really depends on how hot it got inside the car. If the broccoli looks, smells, and/or feels like it is in a condition where it might be unsafe to eat, then perhaps take a pass. The shelf life of broccoli is between one and two weeks. meaning the bacterial growth on its surface is not overly aggressive. Even with the accelerated growth that a warm environment like a car might provide, it seems unlikely that it would become unsafe during that time-frame.

Yes. Cut broccoli can be stored for a short time in a plastic container in the fridge. To be extra cautious, squeeze some lemon juice over the broccoli.
  • Question
I put some broccoli in the fridge, in a plastic bag. The florets have turned yellow. Is it still edible? Should the yellow parts be cut or scraped off?
    Community Answer
As long as there is no smell, it is still edible. The yellow parts will most likely give you gas, so you would probably want to cut them off.
