That depends on the yarn you're using. I suggest you check the label on the yarn to see what size needles you should use.

Think about what you'd like the weight of your blanket to be. For a more lightweight blanket, opt for a cotton yarn, for instance. If you want a heavier blanket for cold weather, you might use a wool yarn.
  • Question
What stitch is used at the end of each row to achieve a straight edge?
    Community Answer
Slipping the first stitch. You do not knit it, but just slip the stitch purl-wise from your left-hand needle to your right-hand one. Do this at the beginning of every row.

  • Question
How many skeins would I need for the small, and then how many would I add to go up a size?

That’s a hard one to answer. It all depends on many factors: yarn weight, type, needle size, how tight or loose you knit, etc. A lapghan might require only two or three skeins, depending on weight, type, etc. Your best bet is to buy more than you need. Most hobby shops and LYSs will be happy to refund or credit any unused whole skeins.
