QuestionWhat do I do with the last length of yarn to finish the scarf?Jen Webber is a Knitting Specialist and the Manager of The Quarter Stitch, a crafting store based in the French Quarter of New Orleans, Louisiana. With over 17 years of knitting and crafting experience, Jen helps educate customers and the public on best knitting practices for their DIY projects. The trick to stop here is to leave yourself a few inches of yarn to work with at the end, and pull it the loop in the last row and the stitch it to anchor it in place. Cut any excessive yarn off and you're done! Some people like to use a larger needle to bind it off and you can do that too so long as it isn't too tight.

QuestionHow do I end the scarf after I finish it?Community Answer

QuestionDoes it matter what size the yarn and needles are?Community AnswerYes and no. Your needles need to match the weight of the yarn. Most yarns will come with a label that tells you what size needles you should use. In general, you need thin needles for thin yarn, and thick needles for thick yarn. You can use any thickness of yarn for the scarf, however. To make a standard scarf, use thinner yarn. To make a chunky/bulky scarf, use thicker yarn.

QuestionHow do I finish the scarf?Community AnswerBind off, which means that when you are ready to be done, you knit two stitches, then pull the first one over the second one. Then knit one more stitch and pull the bottom one over that one. Essentially, just knit until you have one stitch left, then you cut your yarn (make sure to leave enough) and tie it in a knot.
-
QuestionIs there a limit to the number of stitches I can use?Community AnswerYou can use as many stitches as you want. There might be a limit to what your needle can hold, depending on the length of the needle and if you make a really thick scarf, it might be too big for someone's neck but the amount is up to you.

QuestionWith silk and worsted yarn to make scarf, what size needles do I use?MicheleTop AnswererThe needle size is your choice. A smaller needle will give you a tighter weave, larger looser. For worsted weight yarn you can use anything from a size 7 (4.5 mm) to 10 (6 mm). As for silk, it depends on what weight the yarn is. Whether it’s made from silk, wool, acrylic or any combination, it should all be the same size In worsted weight.

QuestionWhat are some points to consider when making a knitted scarf?Community Answer1. How much wool do you have? Depending on how long you want it to be, you need to have quite a bit of wool before starting. Running out of wool halfway through a project is extremely annoying. 2. How wide do you want the scarf to be? You could have a skinny scarf or a wider one. 3. Do you want it to be stripy, patterned, or just plain? 4. Bear in mind the type of wool you want to use. If the scarf is going to be tied around someone's neck, you probably want to do it in a lovely soft wool, not a very itchy one. 5. When you have finished your scarf, please be careful when washing it. Machine washing knitted items is not a good idea. Hand wash your scarf to minimize shrinking.
-
QuestionHow many rows of stitches do I need to make a scarf?Community AnswerIt really depends on how wide you want it to be, and how loosely or tightly you knit. Most pattern writers admonish you to check your gauge, but scarves tend to be a little more relaxed about this rule. I am currently knitting a scarf that is 46 stitches with a size 10 needle using a soft mid-bulk yarn.
-
QuestionHow do you keep the edge of the scarf from curling?Community AnswerAlways make sure your not knitting too tightly. You can tug at the scarf while knitting to keep it somewhat loose and to keep it from curling.

QuestionHow many inches should a scarf be?Community AnswerThe width should be from 6 to 14 inches, length from 50 to 90 inches. An average height man wants a scarf at least 60 inches, and a larger man should look for one in the 70-inch range.

QuestionHow many cast on stitches do I use for a 6 inch wide scarf?Community AnswerIt will depend on your yarn and needle size. Try casting on 15 stitches and knitting about 10 rows with the yarn and needles you want to use, then measure how many stitches are in 1 inch of the yarn. From there you can multiply the number of stitches in 1 inch times the number of inches you want the scarf to be. For example, if you find out that there are 4 stitches per inch, you would need to cast on 24 stitches.
