You could style your braids in different ways. You could switch from a normal braid to a French braid to a side braid et cetera, or you could take them out.

My family teases me too, it's okay. Just say something like, "I'm trying to look nice, so what?" If they see it doesn't bother you, they'll probably leave you alone. Try figuring out what colors look best on you. For example, if you have brown hair and brown eyes, warm colors like reds, yellows and browns would look best on you. Also, try on a dress. Then try on a pair of jeans with a cute too. The outfit you like the best will give you a little insight on what your style is: girly girl or tomboy. Maybe a little of both, and that’s okay! You can wear a cute top with some jeans with some earrings or necklaces. A bracelet would look great with anything too.
