Test your sand for color fastness by adding water to a sample of your sand. If it is not colorfast, your plants will end up soaking up the color along with any water you add. Already-colored fine stone that is waterproof can be purchased at any aquarium supply store.

We are using sand in trays in our wedding centerpieces. The reception is outside under a tent. I’m afraid the sand will blow around. Any ideas how to prevent that without gluing it to the tray?

Inexpensive hairspray will hold the sand in place. Do spray a layer of water over the hairspray to set the hairspray in place. The water helps spread the hairspray between the particles to hold them in place.
