  • Question
I tried the boiling method and there was no salt in the pan when the water evaporated. Did I do something wrong, or could it be a low salinity source?

As the article says, you have to boil it at the lowest setting possible. If this is not the case, the salt may also evaporate. Also, keep in mind that there is very little salt per gallon of sea water.
  • Question
Is table salt also sea salt?
    Community Answer
Sea salt and table salt have the same nutritional value, and both are made similarly. But table salt usually contains added iodine.
  • Question
Is sea salt naturally white in color?
    Community Answer
For a lot of salts, it depends where you get it. For example, Himalayan sea salt is usually pink in color because of the minerals and the nutrients in the water. But it also depends on the process that used to create the sea salt. For example, if the salt is smoked, it will be a harsh brown color whereas if it's boiled, it will usually be a white or light color.
  • Question
How do I know when the salt is dry enough to bottle?
    Community Answer
The salt should start to turn almost crusty; at that point, take it out of wherever you are baking it, and mash it into small crystals, then bottle it.
  • Question
    Can salt lose its saltiness?
    Community Answer
Sodium chloride is readily water-soluble, so if this crude salt were exposed to condensation or rain water, the sodium chloride could be dissolved and removed. Then the salt could in effect lose its saltiness.
  • Question
Where is the best place to find salt water suitable for making salt?
    Community Answer
The ocean, just make sure it's clean, as the article says. In some countries, it may not be the best of choices because of how polluted the water is, so your options are limited if the sea around you isn't clean. Ask around or look it up if need be, even knowing if it's safe enough to fish in is a good start.
  • Question
I over boiled the salt in the pot and it has formed a rock hard salt cake on the bottom of the pot. What is the best way to remove it?
    Community Answer
Soak the pot in dish soap overnight. Then rinse with water and scrub the next day.
