    Expert Answer
Use your tape measure to measure around your waist, about 2" above your belly button. Take that measurement and multiply it by 1.5, and write that number down. Then, measure around the largest part of your hips, as well as from your waist down to where you want the skirt to end. Write those numbers down, as well.
  • Question
How would I make it reversible?
    Community Answer
Cut 3 trapezoids of one fabric, cut 3 trapezoids of second fabric. Sew each set of three together as instructed above. Then lay one set on top of the other set, right sides together. Stitch down front, across all three panels at the hem, then up the inside front. Turn right side out, press, top stitch all around. Finish the waistband as desired.
  • Question
Can this skirt be made for plus-sized women?
    Community Answer
Yes, just use the correct waist measurements to make a skirt for plus-sized women.
  • Question
Can I make this as a long skirt?
    Community Answer
    Yes.
  • Question
Can I use cotton non-stretch fabric to make this skirt?
    Community Answer
Absolutely, that would work just as well as a stretchy material for a light summer skirt. It will, however, hang differently and will look more structured and less floaty.
  • Question
Is there an easy way to add lining?
    Community Answer
I would suggest making the skirt twice, once with your favorite fabric and once with the lining fabric. Then, before adding the button and button hole, sew the lining skirt across the top of the fabric skirt with the wrong sides (or backs of the fabric) together. Then proceed with the rest, just doing everything through both fabric layers.
  • Question
How would I change the measurements if I were using stretch fabric?
    Community Answer
I don't think you would need to, though it depends how much stretch the fabric has. It is always better to make things bigger first and alter it if need be, rather than cutting something too small to begin with.
  • Question
What is the * in the formula?
    Community Answer
It means to multiply. Using an X would be confusing since the author used X to represent a measurement number, so they used * to indicate multiplication.
  • Question
What measurements would you use if you wanted the back panel in pleats or box pleats?
    Community Answer
You would need extra width at the waist/ hip equal to twice the depth of the pleat(s) desired (eg., if you want a 1" deep pleat, you'd allow an extra 2" at the spot where the pleat will be located).
  • Question
How do I sew a button hole?
    Community Answer
Line up the fabric so you can see where the buttonhole needs to be, and carefully snip a slit for the button. If it is a large button, you will need a large slit, if a small button, then a small slit. Sew a zigzag around the loose edges so it doesn't fray.
  • Question
How do I measure for a men's wrap skirt?
    Community Answer
Exactly that same way. These instructions are unisex. You could use a button instead of the tie for a more masculine look.
  • Question
What about making it full length, should it be much wider at the bottom?
    Community Answer
Yes. As it goes down, it must expand. Roughly, you can measure your stride as you take a step, to see how wide the skirt should be. On an average, you can add 1/3 more as compared to the size around the knees.
  • Question
Is it possible to add a tie waist band to the top?
    Community Answer
Yes, make a long waistband, line up with the underneath panel edges and along back and top front panel, then allow it to extend into a tie. Then sew the other tie at the hip.
  • Question
    How do I create/attach a waistband?
    Community Answer
Follow the methods in Sew a Waistband .
