  • Question
Can you spray paint the furniture? And do you need to use the rust protector if there is no rust?
    Community Answer
You can spray paint the furniture. You don't need to use the rust protector if there is no rust.
  • Question
The paint on my black wrought iron patio chair arms is flaking off, with white residue underneath. What is happening?
    Community Answer
I suspect the base metal is coated with zinc (galvanized), then painted. I would scrape and sand loose paint, and repaint.
  • Question
Is flat or semi gloss better for covering old paint on cast iron furniture?
    Community Answer
Either will work, but glossier paint will shed water better in the future.
  • Question
Do I still need to put a primer on wrought iron if I prepare it with a steel brush and sand paper and I'm using an exterior grade enamel paint with DTM?
    Danielle Husband
    Community Answer
DTM paint is formulated for use on metal that's not primed, so it's okay to use it on unprimed wrought iron. However, it's typically best to use a primer even if you've prepared the wrought iron well. Primer helps the paint stick to the wrought iron, creates an even surface, and extends the life of your paint job.
  • Question
Do you have to sand it all the way down to the silver part?
    Danielle Husband
    Community Answer
While it's typically not necessary to sand away all of the old paint, make sure that you sand off paint that is damaged or peeling. Then, sand down the paint that it difficult to remove so that the surface is as even as possible.
  • Question
I want to paint a double bed made out of wrought iron with a silver design in between. How do I protect this design while applying spray paint on rest of the bed?
    Community Answer
Use painter's tape to cover anything you don't want painted. Then paint. And when finished painting, remove the painter's tape.
