QuestionIs it necessary to paint a layer of white gesso onto pre-primed canvas before starting to paint, in order to make the canvas as smooth as possible?Community AnswerIt depends. If the canvas is pre-primed, there is no requirement to add another layer of gesso. However, it's okay to do so if you wish to have a surface with less 'tooth.' The more 'tooth' there is, the rougher the surface of the canvas, so you might want to add one or more coats of gesso to smooth out its surface.
