  • Question
What's a good pneumonic device for the planets?
    Community Answer
A popular way to remember them is 'My Very Easy Method Just Sums Up Naming Planets'. Note that Pluto is included in this, but it's not a true planet.
  • Question
How much time does each planet take to revolve around the sun?
    Coral Chaser
    Community Answer
It is different for each planet, depending on how close it is to the sun. It takes 1 Earth year for Earth revolve, but only 88 Earth days for Mercury. It takes Pluto 248 years to orbit.
  • Question
    What is the ninth planet?
    Community Answer
The ninth planet used to be Pluto before it was demoted to a dwarf planet. There is also a Planet Nine, which is a hypothetical planet in the outer Solar System. Its gravitational influence could explain the abnormal orbits of a group of trans-Neptunian objects found mostly beyond the Kuiper belt.
  • Question
Why is Pluto not a planet anymore?
    Dsmith77
    Community Answer
In 2001 a bunch of astronomers got together and formally defined the term planet. A planet must meet 3 criteria now, and Pluto only meets 2. A planet must be in orbit around the sun (check), must be large enough to have assumed a spherical shape due to gravity (check), and must have cleared its orbit of other floating objects (fail).
  • Question
Why did they do that to Pluto?
    Community Answer
Astronomy has come so far in the last decades, and scientists now have more information that led them to the conclusion that Pluto should be reclassified. Pluto isn't sentient; it doesn't mind its new dwarf planet status.
  • Question
What is the mnemonic device to remember the planets?
    Community Answer
My very eager mother just served us nine pizzas -- the planets, in order, are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.
  • Question
    Are there new planets discovered?
    Community Answer
Not in our solar system, but scientists are constantly discovering new planets in the far reaches of space.
  • Question
What is a trick for remembering the order of the planets from smallest to biggest?
    Community Answer
The planets in that order would be Pluto, Mercury, Mars, Venus, Earth, Neptune, Uranus, Saturn, and Jupiter. To remember that, you could write a story to help yourself. For example, you could say that Pluto was skating and hit Mercury, who was eating a Mars chocolate bar. The chocolate bar hit Venus, who was just proposing to Earth. Venus was angry, and she attacked Neptune and Uranus, who were only children at the time. They cried for their parents, Saturn and Jupiter, who chased Venus away. You could make up any story you'd like though!
  • Question
    What are the discovered planets?
    Community Answer
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.
  • Question
What is the order of the planets?
    Community Answer
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto. They're named in order under Method 4 Step 2.
  • Question
Which planet takes the longest time to orbit the sun?
    Community Answer
Neptune takes the longest amount of time to orbit the sun.
  • Question
Could I remember them by using the sentence: My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nachos?
    Community Answer
Whatever mnemonic device helps you remember them is the best.
  • Question
Why was Pluto disqualified as a planet?
    Community Answer
Pluto was very small in size and did not have the qualities to be a planet.
  • Question
Is there another way of writing it, but with the sun?
    Community Answer
So my very easy method just speeds up naming planets = Sun Mars Venus Mercury Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune Pluto.
  • Question
What is the size of the sun?
    Community Answer
The sun has a diameter of 1.391 million km. By comparison, the earth is only 13,000 km in diameter.
  • Question
Can you tell me another way to memorize the planets?
    Community Answer
My Very Exited Mother Just Spilled Underwear, Nasty!
  • Question
Is there a way to remember the dwarf planets?
    Community Answer
There are only three. They are Pluto, Eris, and Ceres. Maybe try and remember "PEC," or come up with a short sentence or phrase that uses those three letters.
  • Question
Which planet is nearest to the Earth? Which planet is known as the Morning Star or the Evening Star? Which is the largest planet in our solar system?
    Donagan
    Top Answerer
Mercury is the planet nearest the Sun. Venus is usually called the Morning Star or Evening Star, but those nicknames are sometimes applied to Mercury. Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system.
  • Question
Are there nine or eight planets?
    Donagan
    Top Answerer
That is the subject of disagreement among astronomers. In 2006 the International Astronomical Union re-designated Pluto a "dwarf planet" instead of a "planet" because of its small size relative to other planets in our solar system, of which there are now eight.
  • Question
I've heard so many people say Sedna is a dwarf planet, and so many say it is not. Is it really, or is it just a trans-neptunian thing-a-ma-bob?
    Donagan
    Top Answerer
The International Astronomical Union (IAU) prefers the term "small Solar System object." For many years Sedna was known as a "minor planet" (more or less the same as a "dwarf planet") and is also referred to as a "trans-Neptunian object."
  • Question
What is a unique mnemonic used to identify the 8 planets not including Pluto?
    Community Answer
You might like to consider this: My (Mercury) Very (Venus) Excellent (Earth) Monkey (Mars) Just (Jupiter) Served (Saturn) Unicorn (Uranus) Noodles (Neptune)!
  • Question
Are there stars in the solar system that make up a lot of shapes?
    Bill ONeil
    Community Answer
There is only one star in our solar system: our Sun. But, there are billions of stars in our Milky Way galaxy that make up shapes that we call 'Constellations' like Orion (the Hunter), Cassiopeia (the Queen), Taurus (the Bull), Ursa Major (the Big Bear), etc. There are also shapes of stars that we recognize, that we call 'Asterisms' like the Big Dipper (part of Ursa Major), the Summer Triangle (Vega, Deneb, and Altair), and many others.
  • Question
How many planets in our solar system?
    Spaceship
    Community Answer
There are 8 planets in our solar system. They are divided into two groups the inner and outer planets. The first planet is Mercury named after the Roman messenger god which is closest to the sun, Venus named after the Roman god of beauty nicknamed Earth’s twin because of similar size and mass of our planet, Earth which is the only planet that supports life and Mars named after the Roman god of war, nicknamed the red planet. After Mars, the asteroid belt borders the inner and outer planets. Jupiter named after the Roman king of the gods is the largest planet, Saturn named after the Roman god of agriculture, known for having large rings, Uranus named after the Roman god of the sky, and Neptune.
  • Question
Does Pluto still count as a planet?
    Community Answer
No, it was reclassified a dwarf planet because: a) An object larger than Pluto (Eris) was found in the asteroid belt and many others of a similar size. If Pluto was a planet so would all of these other objects be one. It was decided that this would be too many planets, for whatever reason. b) Its orbit is irregular as it crosses Neptune's. c) Unlike the other planets, it has not cleared the area around its orbit of debris.
  • Question
How many planets and dwarf planets are there?
    Pingu
    Top Answerer
In the solar system, there are 8 planets — Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. The exact number of dwarf planets is not yet known. As of 2019, the following are accepted as dwarf planets by the IAU: Pluto, Eris, Haumea, Makemake and Ceres. Other research suggests that there are 9 dwarf planets in the solar system. However, some estimates go as high as 50. Outside the solar system there are many more planets, which are called exoplanets. As of 1 September 2019, there are 4109 confirmed exoplanets.
  • Question
Are the sun and moon planets?
    Community Answer
No. The sun is a star, while the moon is a natural satellite that orbits the Earth.
  • Question
Which planet is the smallest in the solar system?
    Community Answer
Mercury. It is about 3,031.9 miles across. For reference, the moon is 2,158.8 miles across.
  • Question
Why do all the planets move around the sun?
    Community Answer
Gravity keeps them in an elliptical orbit around the sun. As you get closer to the sun, it takes a shorter amount of time to orbit.
