Put on some nail varnish before putting your hands under the water to remove it. Nail polish strengthens the nail without removing the flexibility and keeps the good oils in. It also stops the water from weakening the nail. Don't use a pencil to get out the acrylic. Many chose to soak the nail but to prevent every problem just listed, apply a few coats of nail polish.

Use a plastic scraper or putty knife to gently scrape away paint (vegetable oil can be used to soften up the paint).
