Empty the freezer, unplug it and let it thaw out. Do not scrape the frost from the freezer with a knife or other sharp implement, as you can damage the freezer.

The door gaskets on many units have a built-in heat strip to prevent frost buildup. If your freezer has a temperature control, you could try turning it down, which may in turn generate less heat.

  • Question
I have a Jenn Air fridge with a freezer on the bottom. Every day or two I am finding water on the floor and there seems to be a buildup of ice on the bottom of the freezer. Why is this happening?
    Community Answer
This is likely happening because you have a defrost problem, specifically in the defrost drain. The defrost drain gets clogged with debris, or even ice, causing a blockage. When the evaporator defrosts, the water doesn't drain, but instead, spills over into the bottom of the cabinet. Therefore, eventually making its way onto the floor.
  • Question
I thawed out the ice build-up in my freezer yesterday, and now ice has already started to build up. What should I do?
    Justin
    Community Answer
Sounds like you have a defrost problem if you continue to get excess frost on the back and/or sides of your cabinet. Ask an appliance technician to diagnose the particular defrost failure and give you an estimate for repair.
  • Question
My GE refrigerator's freezer compartment was open all night. Has now run 24 hours straight. Will it eventually stop, and is the freezer OK?
    Justin
    Community Answer
It should be. It will eventually stop when it reaches the set temperatures. If you notice ice build-up around your doors, you can remove this with a warm washcloth. Don't try to overcompensate by changing the temperature setting. Just leave it at the factory-recommended setting.
