Find ways to just be playful and have fun, and put a unique spin on questions that are very common and routine to make them more interesting. Don't make it feel like a job interview. The more you show that you're someone that's fun and easy to hang out with and cool to talk to, the better it will be as opposed to just grilling the person with questions.

Usually, if the person seems to be relatively normal, it's very rare that they turn out to be crazy or dangerous. However, you do always want to be safe. When you're meeting someone for the first time, always meet in a public place where there are a lot of people around. For instance, it's not really a good idea to have someone pick you up from your place. Meet in a neutral location, and don't disclose too much personal information, because in today's world, you never truly know who you're dealing with.
